Turned up with no reservation when they were already very busy, but as there was only 2 of us, there was ripple of hurried activity from a few of the staff/management and within a few minutes we were sat at a table in a tastefully decorated and nicely lit dining room and presented with well laid out menus with clear explanations of each dish. Off to a good start and it only got better.
The service was attentive without being over the top and the food was exceptional! Stuffed mushroom starter with Stornoway black pudding and red onion marmalade was delicious and devoured in just a few minutes. Followed by dishes of duck breast and lamb cutlets and there respective sauces and accompaniments, all perfect. All finished with the indulgent delights of a Belgian waffle smothered in a caramel sauce with a generous dollop of a Premium vanilla ice cream and garnished with a fresh halved strawberry(can you tell that I liked this) Forgive me but eating this may have resulted in one or two noises similar to those overheard from a honeymooner's bedroom.
Which is sort of appropriate as we had just got married the day before. To the management and staff of the Eskdale, thank you so much for fitting us in. It was a truly wonderful experience and we will be back! But we will book in advance next time;-)

Had a simply divine evening meal here. Duck in redcurrant sauce and Chicken stuffed with Haggis and perfectly cooked tasty vegetables. No fancy trimmings, froth etc but as a result you've got nowhere to hide, so kudos to the Chef. Perfect and delicious. (the Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake and Creme Brulee were up there with the best too!)

Very traditional hotel with nice modern touches. Situated right in the heart of the lovely town. All of the hotel was spotlessly clean and nicely decorated and our room was very comfy and spacious. The food at breakfast and evening meal was exceptional, with all produce being locally sourced. Every member of staff we spoke to was friendly and helpful. We were made to feel very welcome and very much look forward to returning to this very special hotel.

Stayed here on a cycling trip. It was a last minute booking and I arrived late in the evening. It was a warm oasis on a cold autumn night! The staff were really helpful and went out of their way to make up comfortable. The hotel is very traditional but very charming. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. The owners have clearly made efforts to bring modern conveniences where practical - like USB sockets for charging. I would gladly stay again.

Clean rooms, nice showers, good breakfasts and it won't break the bank. Recommend booking through one of the booking websites rather than direct, works out cheaper. No air con in the rooms, which doesn't matter for 95% of the time in Scotland, but would have been nice for the sunny long weekend I spent. Other than that a great little base to explore the village and the scenic surrounds.

We booked two rooms at the hotel after viewing the impressive website. We arrived expecting to find ourselves in two of the "14 newly decorated en-suite rooms" as stated on the website. However, the initial rooms we were given were small, poorly decorated and with dirty bed linen. As for the en-suites, the shower attachment in the double room was the perfect height for a hobbit but with no curtain.
The single room (again perfect for hobbits!) was dismal with the wallpaper peeling off the wall. There was an electric shower in this room but it looked like it was the first one ever made. After complaining, we were given alternative rooms to choose from. One of the doubles we were shown had no working light in the ensuite. The double room we eventually chose was a slight improvement.
The single room we chose was much larger however the mattress should have been thrown out years ago as every spring could be felt. The cups in both rooms were unclean and the kettle in the double should have come with a health warning (it was black inside). Breakfast was served and probably cooked by the woman on the reception desk. The only other member of staff seemed to be the cleaner who clearly wasn't doing her job properly. We were very disappointed with the hotel and thought it was vastly over-priced for its quality.
