It is one of the first dedicated tourist hotels in West Scotland. Creetown is just off the A75, 1.5 hours from M6/M76, and an hour from Stranraer ferry terminal. Creetown has been used for many years as an ideal stopover for travellers to and from Northern Ireland. During its early history the Ellangowan was used by Christians, they caught the ferry across the Cree Estuary to visit St. Ninian's cave and chapel, the site where the 6th century saint first brought Christianity to Scotland. In 1973, the hotel used for the cult British Classic Film, The Wicker Man, staring Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Brit Eckland and Ingrid Pitt.

Worst hotel we have ever stayed in. They had no record of our booking, we requested breakfast only to get a knock on the door at 10pm telling us that the chef "didnt want to cook" so we would have to have cereal. However when we down to the restaurant the next morning nobody was there. We went to a wedding on the second night and when we got back at 12.15 the hotel was locked and nobody was there to let us in.
We were not given a curfew, nor were we given a key to unlock the front door so we stood in the rain for half an hour trying to get hold of someone from the hotel with no luck. Spent half the night trying to sleep in the car and then finally managed to find an open ground floor window to gain access into the hotel. Never had to break into our own hotel before. Definitely would NOT recommend staying here.

Very quaint, frozen in time, loved the cosy atmosphere in the pub, just on the ground floor, "where everyone knows your name". Was great having a meal and a beer and then walking upstairs. Lovely staff. Problems were the shower's electric box didn't work, had to switch rooms, ended up upgrading. No hairdryer in the hotel. Wi-Fi didn't work for 24h and no-one fixed it. Even then, I would definitely go back, I love small inns on the side of the road and this one's location, is in the middle of many historical sites reachable by car.
