Barnsdale Lodge Hotel has been in Thomas Noel's family since 1760 and formed part of the adjoining Exton Park, seat of the Earls of Gainsborough. Formerly a farmhouse, Barnsdale Lodge was converted by Thomas in 1989. The Hotel is positioned on the North shore of Rutland Water in the heart of the beautiful, unspoilt, county of Rutland.

We got married at Barnsdale Lodge last week and for someone who likes to plan and control everything.to leave a lot of the day in the hands of other people was quite worrying for me. I need not have been worrying! The team were absolutely fabulous and the day ran seamlessly. We couldn't have asked for better, it just went perfectly and the team were so attentive, hardworking and accommodating to make our day just how we wanted it.
Special shout to Connie, Warren and Rosie just to name a few people who really stood out to us and were just wonderful. Our guests had an amazing time and also commented on how brilliant the staff were, the venue itself is beautiful and the grounds outside were perfect for the kids. Some rooms could do with a little update but they were clean and comfy. Once you went to bed at 1am that's all that matters! Breakfast was great too! Thanks again to you all xx

We stayed one night on a last-minute whim. There was a wedding being held at the same time but we were able to eat dinner, breakfast and lunch and spent time in the lounge without being in the way of the festivities. I believe that there is a barn set up for weddings etc, we heard nothing and slept like babies! The rooms are very well laid out with space in the bathroom!
We had to turn the heating down as it was sweltering. The only negative I have is the bedding didn't fit itself and I had to do a best-as-I-could remake in order to get in and not end up tied in knots. The food and service were both excellent. if you're just passing by and fancy decent food then definitely stop in! They will do their best to accommodate you. but I suspect that booking in high season is a good idea.

Set in an amazing location. Nice and quiet, with plenty of wildlife. All staff are friendly and very helpful. Food is nice. Rooms are well set out and with a little extra, would have hit 5*. Being set back fron the road, you don't get traffic noise, and there are no lights causing problems. For a quiet place with very nice food and great staff, this is the place to stay.

I read some of the negative reviews and wonder if they stayed at the same hotel where we have just spent 3 seriously enjoyable days. Firstly the staff are outstanding with an impressive attention to detail. The room was lovely, clean and very comfortable. Breakfasts were impressive with a wide choice, I always have a couple of double espressos with mine and let me just compliment the hotel also on the quality of the coffee.
Evening meals were a quality act, I am always impressed when there is a wide but limited number of choices, you can be sure that your food is freshly cooked for you, we were not disappointed. Oh and yes the wine list also ticks most of the boxes too. Couple this with the location and there you have it, thank you BLH for a lovely stay, for sure we'll be back.

What a fantastic place to stay. We were there for a wedding reception. The room was beautiful and the bed so comfortable. Only issue door is not self locking so remember that, alos the bathroom door for room 31 seems to lock the opposite way to what you would think. Food at the Reception was lovely and they have great courtyard space and lovely venue for a reception. The breakfast was amazing, smoked kippers off a very lovely menu with the standard items. but delicious. I would say nothing is cheap but you get what you pay for frankly.

Lovely dog friendly hotel, with designated dog areas so we could tuck our rather large girl out of the way, enabling us to enjoy delicious breakfasts and dinner without her bothering other guests. Our bedroom was large, airy and clean and the staff very helpful and friendly. All in all, an excellent and very comfortable base to explore some glorious walks around Rutland Water

A really lovely lodge with comfortable surroundings. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. The rooms were clean, breakfasts was amazing, dinner was delicious. Also great for people who have food intolerances, they catered for both dairy and gluten free diets. Loved the history of the lodge. Would high recommend!

Our stay did not get off to a good start as our 'superior room' felt anything but superior and not like any of those illustrated on the Hotel web site. We were told that it was on the 'list' for refurbishment and the decor certainly had a very tired feel about it. It was, however, clean, warm and the view from the window compensated somewhat for other decorative shortcomings.
My wife and I were booked in for a 3 night stay, a delayed 70th birthday treat and once the disappointment over the 'quality' of the room had faded we did enjoy a very relaxing break. We were, however, shocked when told at reception that we would not be able to dine at the hotel on our final evening because they had an 'event' taking place and because of staff shortages dining spaces were limited.
A pity that we were not made aware of this when we first checked-in and not something I have ever encountered before. Breakfast, the Full English, was excellent. Overall we had the feeling that the hotel was in need of a 'boost'. Many of the staff were rather non-communicative and needed some training in hospitality 'service'. A receptionist and one 'waitress' were an exception. Some of the hotels' website claims were rather stretching the reality that we experienced.

We stayed at one of the lodges (across the road), not in the main hotel. The lodge we stopped in was awesome, clean, maintained and an easy recommendation. Our visit to the hotel for drinks was well, interesting. Hardly anyone around to help, it was a little cold inside for a breezy winters day outside and I just didn't feel welcomed by the receptionist.
We decided not to eat at the hotel as whilst the menu sounded nice, there didn't seem to be much for vegan taste, also this is not a pub food venue which is what we were looking for at the time.

The location is perfect. The first impression from the greeting from staff were friendly and professional. They were very helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable with modern individual pieces of furniture. The menu for dinner was delicious, offering a choice of 8 main courses. The presentation was beautiful. Breakfast was busy but the staff coped brilliantly.
Such a great shame that the hotel had to remind guests that there's a shortage of staff and kindly asked customers to be patient. The customers who complain should try working in hospitality and then they might realise just how hard it is. Thank you for a great break
