Brother and sister, Duncan (Head Chef) and Rachel (Director of Marketing and Business Development). The Ardgowan Hotel is a 36 bedroom family-run, three star AA and Visit Scotland rated hotel in the heart of St Andrews. Our whole team is dedicated to providing a home away from home for every guest who walks through our doors.
He came to architecture through the family craft of wheel wrighting (repairing wooden wheels) rather than through academic study. Rae's lived at 59 South Street, where his crest can still be seen above the window. The house had been in his family since 1782. Although we don't know much about Rae's education we know he was an apprentice for his father, Walter Rae, before gaining more experience in Edinburgh. The first record of Rae as an architect is from the town council minutes of 1844, where he was consulted on the development of South Bell Street.
Whether you've spent a day wandering the historic streets of St Andrews or have enjoyed a round on the golf course, you can come back to our St Andrews hotel rooms to put your feet up. After a hot shower you can head down to our AA Rosette awarded Playfair's Restaurant to sample one of our dishes which use fresh, local produce before retreating back to your room for the rest you need to prepare for the next day. There are many reasons for a visit to St Andrews, and as such we offer a variety of room types to suit your individual needs and budget.
Within the hotel we have our AA Rosette restaurant, Playfair's which serves locally sourced, Scottish food served Wednesday to Sunday. We also have our bar which is located in our Annexe, The Pilmour and is open for food and drink Monday-Sunday. Playfair's is open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner and is open for breakfast for our residents everyday.

This is our third stay at the Ardgowan. It was fabulous. Buffet style breakfast was lovely. Quality produce and plentiful. We ate dinner in Playfairs Restaurant on Saturday night, 2 courses for 30! Our steaks were delicious. Spotlessly clean rooms, comfy beds and great shower! We will definitely be back soon

Positives - Really nice room and bathroom, - in a great location - reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the area - comfy bed Negatives - the shower didn't work at all and ended up having to shower in the bath. - mentioned the shower not working and no discount off the room offered -Breakfast was disappointing. Staff were not very focused and the quality of the coffee and smoked salmon was poor/inedible.

What a lovely hotel The staff are welcoming and efficient. Our bedroom was gorgeous, warm and comfortable. Especially nice getting in there after a day out in the damp weather. Breakfast, pre-ordered the night before, was hot and tasty. Again, the staff were efficient and welcoming. A minor suggestion would be to have a shower curtain rather than the screen as the shower was powerful and the spray went everywhere!
Bathroom toiletries were quality and plentiful. Beds were warm and comfortable. Overall we had a lovely stay and look forward to visiting again. Hotel is in a perfect location for golf, shopping, cafes, bars and restaurants

Fabulous 2 nights at the Ardgowan. Spotlessly clean rooms with a large super comfy bed. All the staff were amazing, especially Carmen, Becca and Duncan the chef! Great restaurant, breakfast was plentiful and delicious. We also loved the outside seating area, it was all just perfect. The hotel is central for everything and we will definitely be back. Would highly recommend.

This is a lovely, very clean and comfortable hotel. The room we had was compact. However, it met our needs. It isn't too big, therefore, has a welcome ambiance. The first point of contact on arrival was the receptionist. She was extremely helpful and friendly whilst having professional approach. We have booked again for July as we loved our stay.
