Chequers Inn Hotel Post invasion of England by William the Conqueror in 1066 and his implementation of the Doomsday Book* in 1086, networks of counting houses were developed all over England. Taxes due from landowners and businesses would be collected at these offices. The TAX officers used a piece of Chequered cloth on which the taxes would be counted. Hence the name given to the many TAX offices up and down the country was 'The Chequers'.

The Chequers is confirmed to have origins in the village of Forest Row from 1452, this being confirmed by various references to the Chequers in a variety of old literature and architectural investigation.

The strangest place I've ever stayed in, the rooms are dark, the staff almost non exited, the whole place locked up by 9pm, it's supposed to be a restaurant! The way in in the evening is around the back wide open to anyone, if I'd been staying on my own I'd of left. And our payment was taken twice!

Toilet seat hanging off upon arrival and toilet was filthy, hallways are pitch black and lights don't come on till about 10/11pm, fire alarm blaring at 8am with guests not knowing where to go and one guest having to silence the alarm as there is no staff in the building till 9/9:30, I know it's only 2 star but some of these standards are just appalling, would not be returning here in a hurry

Room was okay just. Very old with a spartan decor. Service was non existant. After booking in mid afternoon on Friday, we didn't see any staff until Sunday mid morning. Although we had arrange to dine elsewhere. The restaurant was empty at all times. Twice the restaurant was locked at 9.00 am. We were not alone in receiving a ghostly experience. We could had been on the Mary Celeste. Probably got better service. Not impressed at all.

Room was somewhat dated and tired. Carpet dirty and no hot water on second morning of stay.

Nice old world stule pub but the hotel rooms are in desperate need of some tlc. Mildew in the bath and shower head heavily scaled. Bed was comfy on the plus side

The bed was extremely comfortable and water nice and hot. Was quiet. However we came back after going out to eat and the pub entrance was all in darkness and the doors locked. We were not told we had to walk down a side street and go round to the back entrance which isn't easy to find unless you know where you are going. Thank god for other patrons otherwise we would have had to find another hotel!

If you want a good rest in a great location, this is it. Big beds and clean sheets. Don't expect more than that, so just book with realistic expectations. Tesco Express just opposite for coffees and snacks. Good pizza and pasta place right next door.

Many reviews seem harsh. We had a comfortable stay. Easy check in, clean room, plenty of hot water. Not fancy but fine. Pick up tea from breakfast room if you want some (why not put in rooms?!). Don't necessarily expect breakfast although advertised - several nice cafes nearby though!

Booked this as emergency accommodation for my dad as my mother was kept in hospital over night. He arrived about 8.40pm after saying he'd be there between 8-9 to a locked door. Eventually got in to the owner saying they'd messaged him. There was a young man at reception complaining that no hot water coming out shower. The owner was arguing and told him the boilers were working and to feel the pipes.

His room key was left in the room door. Sheets and towels were clean. But he had to wear his socks to walk on the carpet. Room very dated. Dad went to leave at 8.15am and the front door was locked. He had to struggle in the dark to find his way out. I stayed here over 20yrs ago and I don't think it's been decorated since there.

Lovely old building with real character and charm. yes it's a bit dated but definitely not as bad as a lot of reviews make out! Our room was basic and dated but clean and comfortable and perfect for the price. Great location, walking distance from other pubs and restaurants and very pretty surroundings. Friendly host on check in, although nobody around to check out, however we had been told to leave the key in the room of that was the case so no issue really! Would stay again with no hesitation.
