One of England's top luxury small hotels near Windermere in the heart of the Lake District, Gilpin Lodge Country House Hotel is perfectly situated - far from the crowds, but just a stone??s throw from the breathtaking lakes and fells. Set in 20 relaxing, tranquil acres of private country gardens, moors and woodland in the Lake District National Park, the hotel is only two miles from Lake Windermere, twelve miles from the M6, and almost opposite Windermere Golf Course - also known as the "miniature Gleneagles".

We went for a very COVID delayed afternoon tea and the reception was great, although we didn't get the drinks menu we asked for. The savoury elements were great but the deserts were far too sweet even for my taste. For two of us we only got one sheep sweet, would you only get 1/2 if one person went? No one came to see if we had enjoyed the tea and we were left to see ourselves out.

We visited Gilpin Lake House and Hotel last month for our elopement style wedding with our three adult children and were married at the Boat House in a beautiful, intimate ceremony. From the moment we arrived until we left the Lake House two days later, we were overwhelmed by the warmth, attention to detail and genuine kindness of all the team there.
This was matched only by the stunning beauty of the location, rooms and facilities at the Lake House. The breakfast was also outstanding. We were all blown away by the whole experience. We followed this with a minimoon for myself and my new husband at one of the Hotel Spa Lodges. A complete contrast in setting with a feeling of great luxury in a very private setting.
The lodges have been styled with enormous thoughtfulness, anticipating your every whim with the delivered breakfasts being extremely decadent. Well worth a mention was the quality of the food everywhere at Gilpin, from breakfast, to afternoon tea, to a sharing menu at Gilpin Spice to the elegant tasting menu at Hrishi. In particular for me, as a coeliac, it was made very easy for me to dine without compromise which is a rarity!
We've been lucky enough to stay in and dine at some amazing places but Gilpin, as much for the team that work there as the place itself, is the one to match and the one we will eagerly return to.

A must have experience. Although the tasting menu seems have pricey on first glance the food is definitely worth the expense. If you choose the menu with tasting wines I would warn that the courses and wines come very quickly, you have to drink the wine rapidly to keep up with the courses. By the end of the meal you may find yourself staggering! The staff and lovely and attentive- we were lucky enough to have Hirishi himself ding the menu. This isn't a place that you would regularly visit, however it is lovely for a one off or special occasion.

The check in via the security hut to our lodge was very impressive. The dog friendly lodge was clean and spacious with a great garden space and wooden hot tub constantly at 39. The service was excellent with friendly staff. We managed to book Gilpin Spice for one night and the food was spot on. The main detraction was the archaic and mistrustful policy of demanding a deposit of 3 figures for our stay.
We had to pay and had a large credit balance at departure and 4 days later we still haven't had that credit balance returned. Sadly this leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. I fail to see the justification for this delay.

After staying at this hotel a couple of years ago we wanted to return as soon as we could as we enjoyed it so much. The hotel was full on the dates we wanted to go but we managed to book a table in the Hirshi restaurant for my birthday as a treat. We received an email 1 week prior to our booking cancelling our table which went into my junk folder luckily I was looking for another email and i found it. I have tried numerous times to contact the Gilpin but my call hasn't been answered and my emails have been ignored. Terrible service and I will not be returning!

Great place, Excellent location The big thing letting this place down is the fact staff work for normal pay on xmas eve/day new years eve/day. Yet do an amazing job, to have them working on normal hourly rate on these days is beyond scrooge. My advice is to give the staff generous tips if you are enjoying this establishment on them days. As for the owners?
Where is the xmas spirit? No doubt the business earns a few quid on these days, please pay your staff a bit extra as if you look at the reviews, The staff make that place what it is. Other than that great place.

Restaurants are great, displointed by the hotels response when the power went out late in the evening, no apology or response from the hotel staff when it was brought to their attention, ruined what should have been a destination stay.i have to say the night porter/ manager did his very best to help out.advice take your own candles

My husband and I used our honeymoon money to book a night away here in a spa lodge. Our one year old was very sick the weekend we were due to stay and we were absolutely gutted to have to cancel. To make matters worse not only did we lose our 200 deposit but the company also chased us up with emails and phone calls and charged us a further 450. We now will not be able to afford to rebook another date anywhere else.
We understand that there was a 2 week cancellation policy, but given we booked quite last minute anyway and given our circumstances we thought they could have at least waived part of the fee to allow us to afford to rebook our honeymoon. Absolutely gutted, but won't be looking to stay here in the future after this experience.
