We are a Hotel, Bunkhouse, Cafe / Bar, Restaurant, Bookshop & Music Venue based in Ullapool in the epic and beautiful surroundings of Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands. Lovely atmosphere, the food was brilliant and service was prompt even with the numbers they were serving. We really enjoyed the entire day. The Ceilidh Place in Ullapool grew out of Broomview Cottage and was started in 1970 by the actor Robert Urquhart, who was born there in 1921. He started a small cafe in the boatshed with aspirations that it became a place for eating, meeting, talking and singing.

Services
They are simply furnished and comfortable and most have a bathroom within. There are no televisions - but each room has a classy radio and a small library. The books have been selected by a number of different readers - all of them well known to us as customers and some may be well known to you too.
At 5pm the buzz of the caffeine has worn off and we're ready for a wee G&T whilst perusing the menu. The sun is heading over the hill and the tables are set for dinner. Our standard menu has all our favourites from the last 5 or so years whilst the accompanying specials menu lets the chefs get creative on a daily basis.
There's a sensory overload when you push open the cafe door. A smell of sizzling bacon, freshly ground coffee, the warm glow of the woodburner and a burst of award winning titles perched in front of the bookshop to entice you in. It is the heart of the CP: the eating & meeting and the talking & singing.
Our bar is well stocked with all the delights we can get our hands on - most familiar and some more unusual bottles from time to time. There's a gin from pretty much every Hebridean Island at the moment and a good selection form the rest of the country. Our staff are fairly well informed with most of our products.

Walked in to have coffee and tea and sat down at an unreserved table. A surly server with no personality informed us we couldn't sit because he had another party coming at 5pm. Given that is was not yet 4pm we asked if we could sit for coffee. He argued with us and then collected the napkins on the table and stomped off. Then the manager came over and said the same thing.
We said we'd be out in 30 minutes (which we were) so he finally let us stay. It would've been helpful if they ASKED us up front how long we were going to stay. Not very good customer service at all. And they have lots of servers standing around whilst customers wait. Coffee and tea were fine as was the service once they were finished harassing us. We won't be back since there are plenty of other choices.

A gem in Ullapool! Friendly, helpful staff. We enjoyed a full Scottish breakfast, delicious! Clean, tidy and dog friendly. We didn't have our pooch with us but the couple a table away did, and shortly after sitting were offer a bowl of fresh water for there little companion. The only negative, we stood for 10mins waiting to pay but we'd revisit.

Loved the setup and hours, nice to find a place open for breakfast after a week on the Hebredies and the coffee and food was very good. Service was good as well. My only complaint is that they state they can cater for vegans but my breakfast came and it was 1 veg sausage, 1 tatty scone a small bowl of beans and some mushrooms and half a tomato. Even the veggie breakfast looked small in comparison to the full Scottish which was the same price.
I asked for a couple extra sausages for my vegan breakfast after I got it to make up for the missing items, which they gave me, but it would be nice if they just supplemented these for veggie diners without having to ask, a bigger bowl of beans, some extra mushrooms and tomato and an extra sausage would go a long way for us in added value without breaking the bank for the restaurant!

A real treat. A lovely welcome on arrival and we were shown around. The bed was comfortable and we really enjoyed the art scattered throughout the building. The library and public rooms were very comfortable and relaxing, especially the open fire in the downstairs lounge. The bookshop was also a great surprise. We had a really nice meal in the restaurant and enjoyed the live fiddle and banjo music. We feel that we have discovered this gem now and will certainly be coming back

Breakfast and coffee were superb we went back twice but sadly the lady at the front end (who gave the impression she was in charge) is very rude. She couldn't even be bothered to say Hello as people walked in the door she would just bark 'we are full'. Thankfully the staff (young staff too) all seemed to smile and did a good job at serving - maybe they could train the lady at the front - who, incidentally seemed to have the power to where her face mask under her chin when all other staff wore them correctly! Such a shame, but I guess because the food is good she manages to somehow get away with it. They should have received 5 stars!

We booked our reservation. We arrived to a mediocre welcome and showed to our table. 10 minutes later the guy who welcomed us said did I explain the menu? I cant remember? We said no, he continued to reel off the list of what the DONT have available. Extensive list of meals no longer available. With a small variety of choice we ordered the venison burger.
The atmosphere was bland. Staff had no enthusiasm for the job. Everything felt cold with no personality. Whilst waiting for our food a huge bulb above me was constantly being switched on and off. Being sensitive to light and having medical difficulties this was not good. I asked a staff member politely what the light was for. He explained that the chef switches it on when a meal is ready.
The staff turn it off when the meal has been taken? He said this works better than the staff shouting across the restaurant to communicate when the food is ready. Very bizarre way of working. The food was poor. Extremely dry venison burger. No garnish. And a few fries absolutely laced with salt. Paid the bill and legged it to tesco express for evening meal and snacks. I hope we were extremely unlucky and this does not become a pattern as the reviews I read were promising.

If you're using Ullapool as a base to explore the Highlands, or just need a retreat from the world for a few days, the the Ceilidh Place is just right. The residents reading lounge with coffee, tea and honesty bar is a wonderful place to be with a good book for the afternoon. The staff are delightful, the food lovely and the location sublime.

Located in beautiful Ullapool, the Ceilidh Place is a true hidden gem. You can start at the bar if you're waiting for a table. You'll find several cask beers and bottles to choose from. Or there are ample whisky and wine choices. For dinner I was delighted to see that there were some amazing-sounding vegetarian options available. I started with "yesterday's soup" (4.50)--which is vegetarian and way tastier than it sounds!
I followed it with my entree, the chickpea, spinach, and spinach tagine with coconut, chili, and dukkah, served with pita bread (10.25). The entree was actually as tasty as it sounded, very fresh and flavorful. I capped off my meal with our server's favorite whisky, the Inchgower 14. It was a great recommendation, as I'll be hard pressed to find it in the states. The food, atmosphere, and service at the Ceilidh Place are amazing. Totally worth stopping here if you're in the area.

Service can be a bit hit and miss, certainly not as warm and friendly as some places, but the food is utterly fantastic and the setting wonderful. We were up for Loopallu last year, it was the first my husband had been in the Ceilidh Place and it hasn't changed a bit. We had a few lovely meals here and spent each day in the bar/outside between bands. Fabulous selection of drinks, great bookshop attached to it, and perfect for people watching.

This is just called the Ceilidh Place and is not just a hotel but a wonderful place to come and shelter from the relentless rain battering down during our Scottish summers! Many a day has been whiled away here with the Herald crossword and a good book with coffee and scones. There is a fab wee bookshop attached and great music often playing. The coffee shop bit serves cakes and light meals, and the restaurant serves fabby meals. Many many happy memories
