Services
We will not take a deposit at this time and will be flexible with date changes if required. We strongly suggest you book tables to dine with us when you make a room reservation as capacity will be reduced. Booking direct at Brook House Inn, gives you our best available rate. Booking through a third party may be easy, but the cost to small hotels will eventually mean everyone pays more.
The Thornley family have been looking after Brook House Inn for 22 years now, and in that time we have had in excess of 1000 different real ales on the bar, and still there are new ones to try! The bar is open all day with food served alongside fine ales wine and whisky, talking of whisky, our list has about 180 different malts on it! A growing list of gins 35 at last count and the wine list is pretty good too.
The Boot Beer Festival has been going for quite a few years now, it started as a way to get visitors to the valley during the Foot and mouth outbreak, and is one of the few good things to come out of a bad time in Lake District history. The Festival is now a great event spanning 4 days with music in the pubs at Boot and starts with a curry night at Brook House Inn on the Thursday evening. Over the course of the festival we will have at least 40 real ales on the bar, usually 12 at a time until they are gone.
We have a menu with all the malts listed and a couple of tours devised by Gareth to set you on a course to whisky bliss. Any night can be a whisky tasting night at Brook House Inn! But if you fancy something with a bit of structure, book a tasting with Gareth who will supply a selection of 5 malts for you to try, with tasting notes, some appropriate nibbles and hopefully a bit of good banter about the whisky and wider world!. Over the last few years we have seen a sad increase in the price of rare malts like the ones pictured below.

We visited twice for drinks and dinner. We didn't stay here. Brook House Inn offers an excellent selection of local ales along with the usual range of soft drinks, wines and spirits. The menu is very good and features local produce. The seabass, brill and also the crab Caesar salad were excellent and really well prepared. The hot wings were really tasty/hot as described and the sausage and the lamb chops were also very tasty.
Between four of us we sampled a lot of the menu and also the specials board; starters, mains and puddings were all equally good. The people that work here really care about the service they give, really efficient, friendly and keen to ensure everything was ok. The building is old, but the decor is clean and fresh and complements original features well.
The tiled fireplace is particularly lovely. A reservation is a good idea as it can be very busy. Make sure you let them know if you will be bringing your dog, they try to space them out so that everyone can relax and enjoy their time here. If the weather is good, there are plenty of tables and benches outside. Everywhere is clean and tidy and well maintained. A really lovely place to stop for refreshments, lunch or dinner. Very good.

23rd-25th May 2022: having been coming to the village of Boot in Eskdale since 2005, the Brook House has been well visited. Nothing but good food, good ales and a selection of about 180 whiskeys. Dog friendly! Painted brilliant white, the Brook House stands out for miles to see, even from the top of Stanley Ghyll at its newest view point platform

We arrived earlier and they checked us in very quickly. The service was 10+ everyone was very nice (especially the lady with short hair). The food was good, delicious breakfast. Very good location. The only issue we had was with the bathroom as this wasn't as clean. There were huge spider webs in 3 corners in the room and the bathroom was dusty, not cleaned properly at all. I think they should improve the cleaning service!

"DISHONEST" PUB GRUB After 2 days of walking in the hills we returned to the campsite looking forward to some honest pub grub and local beer. Unfortunately our first choice (The Boot Inn) was fully booked so we walked onto the Brook House Inn. After ordering food our starters took over an hour to come out due, we were told, to an issue with the till.
For mains we ordered the "Cumbrian Lamb Kleftiko". To say we were disappointed by this dish is a massive understatement. The portion was small with fatty meat, poorly prepped veg and generally fairly tasteless sauce. It reminded me of meals I cooked as a student on a shoe string budget. We begrudgingly ate the mains mainly because we were so starving hungry having waited so long for the food to appear.
The worst part of the evening was the reaction from the so called manager when we complained about the wait for the food and the quality of the mains. Her immediately defensive attitude suggested it was not unusual to receive complaints. The manager did knock a main off the bill and begrudgingly a bit extra. If you can avoid this pub then I would recommend doing so to avoid disappointment. The standard of the food, decor, staff and prices are very poor.
