Built as two private houses in the middle of the 19th Century, and backing on to one of the prettiest squares in York, the two listed buildings have been lovingly restored to retain the ambience of a private home and provide peaceful, elegant rooms where the pressures of the day can be eased away.
Services
At Holmwood House, all the rooms are different, both in decoration and size, and all have their own bathroom or shower room. There are many extra touches in addition to the usual colour television, coffee and tea making facilities, radio alarm clock and hair dryer. Free wi fi is available also in all rooms.
Breakfast is our speciality: we offer a choice of fruit juices; grapefruit segments and prunes; cereals, including our special muesli (full of fruit and nuts); followed by a truly wide selection which includes the usual full English breakfast, kippers, fruit platter, vegetarian breakfast, hot croissants and toast, and, to help the digestion, we will soothe you with gentle classical music. Rather than tie you to an evening meal in, we feel it better to allow you to try the wide range of restaurants in York.
York is under two hours from London and 2 1/2 hours from Edinburgh and we are 10-15 minutes walk from the station. Holmwood House is situated on the A59, a main city bus route, giving access to the arterial roads, the A1 and M62, ideal not only for businessmen but for those who wish to explore the surrounding countryside.

Great location to the train station and bus line. Room and furnishings were somewhat dated; it wouldn't take much to refresh the rooms and we certainly understand the challenges of the last few years to this industry, so this is not meant to be a criticism. Big room for 3 of us. Staff was friendly and very responsive to questions. Good breakfast to start the day!

The hotel public spaces were clean and in good condition. Great breakfast. Friendly staff. About 25 min walk to city centre, or short bus ride from right outside. Sadly family room was shabby and in desperate need of a refresh. It was clean, but just badly worn furnishings, paintwork etc. Also, no WiFi coverage in our room even though it was advertised. Staff couldn't help us with this.

Good for the money (~100/night for a king-size). Some easy wins available to improve this place: -On arrival, the back door from car park was locked (mid day) so we were stuck outside for 10mins awaiting entry. -The furnishing and kit is a bit dated, heaters could be replaced, the addition of a radio/bluetooth speaker would work wonders. -The TV is ok, but most people bring their own entertainment and simply need a bigger screen. -Bedroom door snaps shut loudly, which is painful to the ear and likely disruptive to neighbours.
Bathroom door desperately needs WD40 on the hinges. -The 4 poster bed has no drapes. Whats the point? In sum: Refurb, redecorate, take a breather and bring in some fresh eyes. This could be an easy 5* hotel. Breakfast is good. Establishment is clean. Staff are polite, efficient, and friendly. Other patrons were pleasant. I do recommend. Edit: windows are drafty; it is probably cold in winter months.

The hotel wasn't as expected, bedroom very basic, childl like lattedbeds, very thin mattress, wasp behind chair at dressing table, skirting board kicked off dining room, desperately needs updating, and new cleaner, breakfast was superb, lovely man serving, very attentive, even though no sweetener for tea, but over all won't go back

The great breakfast experience feels like you're in a different hotel. Quality. The rooms, are tastefully painted, but the duvets and pillows are tired. Grab a blanket (from inside the wardrobe) and throw over the bed as you'll need it. Plentiful tea and coffee provision in the room. It's a nice walk into town, and there's free parking.
