If you love the rugged outdoors with a bit of luxury then this place is perfect. Stunning location surrounded by unspoilt rurality, and great exploration opportunities. The hotel itself is very well run. Extremely comfy, plush bedrooms. Dinner was excellent and breakfast superb and faultless. Never remember having tasted such good bacon and eggs! Lovely atmosphere and we would love to return.

Elegant, characterful hotel set in a lush riverside valley, near beautiful Postbridge. Great breakfast, friendly staff. Wondrous walks nearby. Looking forward to evening dining on my next visit. Peaceful - a tonic.

Just returned from my second stay at this wonderful place. I was sad to read the review on here which, in my opinion, was trying to suggest the owners, and or, guests made the people feel uncomfortable due to their ethnicity. Well all I can say is that on this visit I shared the dining room and lounge with a newly wed mixed race couple and at no point were they treated any differently than I and they seemed to be very happy and very comfortable.

I have only been here twice so can only speak as I find, but I have had some wonderful conversations with the family that own the hotel, especially John, and I feel confident in saying there isn't a racist, bad or unfriendly bone in his body. I would think the rest of the family and staff are the same. I assure you if I had the slightest inkling that anyone here was racist, I wouldn't stay here myself. Having booked various hotels from the awful website, Booking.com and had many experiences ranging from awful all the way to, worse than awful, I today find myself spending my last night of two, in a hotel that can only be described as resplendent.

I spent two evenings eating the perfectly cooked meals that consisted of local ingredients as far as is possible and tasted wonderful. The rooms all seem lovely when viewed on the website and the one I stayed in was far better than the website made it look. Everything here was immaculately clean and the room smelled fresh with crisp linen on a comfortable bed.

That is all well and good, but, the icing on the already iced cake was the family, and friend, that run it. John and Sarah make you feel genuinely welcome and their small team, which includes their daughter, work in the same manner making you feel included and comfortable, even when travelling alone as I was. You can have cream teas on the veranda or the various tables dotted around the grounds all overlooking the river that runs through it, or in the dining room or lounge.

The bar, which is in the lounge, is stocked with more than the basic, red, white, beer and spirits, and also has local cider and good wines available. I do not often, if ever, become melancholy when leaving somewhere to go home, however this trip has left me wanting much more. I will definitely be returning just as soon as I can and considering this family have only been running the place since April, the next visit can only be better, if that is possible. Lastly, John, sit down for a while, chill. Oh, and it is dog friendly, what's not to like.

Lydgate House hotel is one of those special hotels that you want to keep a secret from your friends. Set in the very middle of Dartmoor National Park down a discrete country track you arrive in the gravel car park and are greeted by the calming sound of a burbling river, trees rustling, and wonderfully nothing else. Absolute tranquility is one of the reasons we have been three times in 6 months. John and Sarah, who own this family run hotel are equally relaxed, and with Isabel and Kelly the family theme contribute to the peaceful vibe.

The rooms are comfortable and charmingly simple. This is an informal country hotel for people who value a stunning location in the very middle of 380 square miles of National park. After a day exploring you return to rest weary feet in the lounge and bar before Sarah serves up her excellent home cooking in the restaurant. It really is a place that gives unrivalled access to Dartmoor during the day and a genuine sanctuary in the evening and at night.

As a result it's the only hotel we have found where we can completely relax and recharge. Lydgate House hotel is a rare mixture of part hotel part retreat. So if you do decide to visit don't tell your friends.

Fairly pleasant stay. Hotel small clean and comfortable. Decor v traditional and beds comfortable. However there were some issues: Upon my arrival one of the owners offered to take my baggage to the room. However he requested, in a "restrained, apologetic" way that one should not "burn incense in the room " as "it sets off the alarms". I replied that I had no incense and would have no intention of doing such a thing in a hotel.to which he responded that " he couldn't help but notice an incense smell " from the baggage.

This was a bit alarming but I thought nothing more of it. We are a British Asian family. Second point.: I would have appreciated manually controllable central heating in room rather than a heater for my elderly mother ( heater rapidly became hot and fused after 3 days with no other heater available - therefore had to buy my own. This was known to the owner as they could offer no second heating option.

What ensued was quite a uncomfortable atmosphere between myself and hosts when I raised my concerns. The proprietor stated categorically that the central heating remained off throughout the year. They however offered to provide me with more quilts. Note is was a particularly rainy week in august and the temperatures had dropped outside Heater ( self bought) and quilts togther made for a more comfortable final night for my mother.

I was also extremely surprised to be asked by one of the owners why I had thought to bring an elderly frail ill person to dartmoor, given the unpredictability of he weather ( My mother is 86 and not ill, however she is, like any other person of this age group, vulnerable to chest infection in the wrong conditions. Also I've taken my v frail mother to the Alps in Switz, bavaria and Austria in autumn and northern Spain, with no issues - the hotels were small family run efficient extremely friendly and go out of their way to provide basic comforts for elderly frail guest) During this somewhat "heated conversation" which ensued, the proprietors reminded me that they had loaned us a wheelchair ( implication being that I should have been satisfied at this and stopped complaining?

I feel rather sad that my family and I didn't really feel " at home" There was an air of " forced geniality and politeness" and the hosts appeared at times rather " exasperated " rather than show a real sense of willing to show any empathy and resolve the issue. I found the stay rather uncomfortable and would have liked to feel more at home. I would have liked very much to use the lounge to read with my family however I didn't feel comfortable enough to do this.

Superb. Host and staff are just so friendly and helpful. Rooms comfy and for once you get a good and powerful shower, important for me after walking the Moor. This is a beautiful location, so quiet and peaceful yet being just off one if the main roads across Dartmoor is easy to find and a fantastic location. It provides easy access to so many of Dartmoors main attractions and is within easy reach of Plymouth of you want something different. Hotel is spotless and just so comfy with wonderful food. Can't fault it

Great location off the main road. The hosts, a family that has taken over the B&B just a month ago, were very welcoming. Room was small but cosy and heated. Very clean and the bathroom had all toiletries needed. Breakfast was plentiful both cold and hot. While this wasn't a major issue, the bed could have been a bit better as the mat is too soft and end up sinking in the middle. Doors need new locks that are perhaps less noisy. Overall happy and I would stay again
