The Trout Hotel has been at the heart of the pretty gem town of Cockermouth for several centuries. Going back to 1670, the hotel was first built as a private residence for the Egremont Estate. It was known as Sandclose and remained so until it became the Lakes Hotel in 1934. In the 1960s, as trout and salmon fishing became popular on the River Derwent and River Cocker, the hotel changed its name to the Trout Hotel and over the years, became a favourite retreat of Hollywood legend Bing Crosby, who loved to visit for fishing breaks.
The Trout is an independent hotel and we are a very close-knit team. Many of us have been here for a long time, some for as many as 20 years and we love to go that extra mile for our guests - it really matters to us that your stay with us is special and you feel truly taken care of. We will always aim to surpass your hopes. This is a very personal business and that's why so many of our guests are now friends and return to us year after year.
Whether it's a stroll along the towpath, a visit to a local brewery or even a cruise along Derwentwater, there's something for everyone to enjoy during a stay at The Trout Hotel. We're proud to be a part of the Western Lake District - a beautiful and relatively undiscovered area by the majority of Cumbria's leisure visitors.
Finding the right hotels in The Lake District can be quite the headache, especially when you have an abundance of enticing Lake District hotel deals vying for your attention. Thankfully, the team at the Trout Hotel are on hand to make your search for the best lake District accommodation deals that little bit easier.

My wife and I are occasional diners in the Terrace Bar at the Trout Hotel in Cockermouth. Sadly, due to Covid being the cause of staff shortages, the Terrace Bar has not been open much in the last year or so. However it was open on Easter Sunday and we booked a table for the evening. We were looking forward to our first meal in the Terrace Bar for a while and we weren't disappointed.
We both chose the Easter Sunday menu and started with the goats cheese and chive souffle which was incredibly tasty. Next was a blackcurrant sorbet followed by Roast Beefand Yorkshire pudding for the Mrs and sea bass with Samfire and sauted potato for me. Very tasty and plenty of it.for most people anyway! Fourth course was sweet and the wife chose cafe creme brule with ice cream and I had hot cross bun butter pudding with custard.
I am sorry to say that there was too much for me, and while I tried my best, I just couldn't finish. Coffee was also included in the price of 32 each and there were other choices on the Easter Sunday menu. If you preferred, there was also the a la cart menu. The service is always good at the Trout we find and it was great to see Martin, Stephen and the team again.
In addition to all of this there was a singer performing in the Terrace Bar called Glen Anderson who had a great voice and sang a variety of songs which were suitable for all age groups except for the very young. Now we are looking forward to our next visit. The Derwent restaurant has been and still is open at the Trout Hotel, but we prefer the Terrace.
My only reservation is the price of drink. The bar prices are quite expensive. But the food is good value for money and quality. Also the service is good and when we had entertainment on this occasion, it all makes for a very enjoyable evening.

We stayed here for several night with three rooms over the Christmas holidays. The rooms are nice and the beds and linens are very nice. The staff was extremely nice and kind despite working on the holidays. We felt the food at their restaurant was average though so I wouldn't plan on too many meals there

Had our work christmas dinner here and it was great. The staff were so helpful and friendly, the venue was great - well set up and thought through. The food was amazing and quite reasonable really. Organising, and making last minute changes had been really simple. Definitely would recommend the place for anyone looking to host an event in the area

What's happened to the food in this beautiful place.? Its was really mediocre and not up to the usual standard of the trout. I only wanted a sandwich and asked the waitress what the bread options were to which she replied.white or brown sliced. others in our group mentioned that the quality of their food wasn't up to scratch either. Come on sue.sort your menu and chefs out

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Trout Hotel on the dinner, bed and breakfast deal. We had a lovely room which was clean and comfortable and dinner was brilliant every evening. All the staff we dealt with were excellent, offering proper Cumbrian hospitality! Great value and we would definitely stay again.
