Cumbrian Ales is Kirkstile's own brewery and the range includes the multi-award winning Loweswater Gold. With demand far exceeding supply it was decided in 2009 to move brewing to a dedicated custom built brewery in Hawkshead on the shores of Esthwaite Water. Many awards have followed including the ultimate accolade of Champion Golden Ale of Britain for the fantastic Loweswater Gold.
A cot or z-bed can be accommodated in some rooms at a charge of 10 per night for small children. For stays of 5 nights or more there is a discount of 10% on the room rate - does not apply to Winter Offer. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate dogs in the guest bedrooms. We are happy for dogs to be in cars in the car park and to accompany you in the bar areas of the hotel (except 5.30pm to 10pm). A charge will be made if cancellation occurs as follows: within 14 days of date of arrival, 20 per person.
There are many wonderful walks directly from Kirkstile itself, around Buttermere and in the Northern Lake District generally. This is one of Wainwright's favourite areas. Walks from the Honister Pass include the summit of Great Gable and many other famous Lakeland Peaks. Many people who stay at the Kirkstile choose not to use a car at all during their visit.

Ate here after a day on the fells. Food ( Venison loin and roast beef ) and service were both good, without being exceptional ( for the price ), so I'd happily return. We arrived at 5:45pm on a Sunday without a reservation, but there were plenty of empty, unreserved tables, so the "Oooh, I'll have to check if I have space" seemed a bit over the top! To be fair, if, like many places, they have problems getting kitchen staff, they might have to control the number of covers?

We walked over the fells from our camping spot to go here for lunch a couple of weeks ago after a recommendation from our hosts. Was a busy Saturday lunchtime but there were loads of tables outside. We had the fish finger sandwich and the vegan burger, both were really good. They had a great selection of vegan options for a rural pub. Could do with more cider choice, only had one on tap and one bottled option, but after a hot day walking a cold pint of anything was very welcome! Service was very good and prompt despite a busy Saturday lunchtime. Would definitely go back!

Lovely friendly country pub. We thought we might be to early to go there as it was only 11.30 but they were open for coffee and scones or cake. We didn't have any food but it was quite busy with people eating so seems really popular. They also have there own micro brewery, my husband of course had to try and said the beer was really good. This place is on the list for another visit but probably with food the next time.

Food was poor. The risotto was over cooked, the rice would have been better served with cream and sugar. The Blackbean burger and sweat potato was cold. Nothing was eaten of that yet the waitress said nothing when she collected the plates. A nice location, but the food is below pub grub standard, looks like they are trying too hard with teenage chefs.

Fantastic pub! Stopped off after a cold water dip at Buttermere. Pub was fully booked for dinner but we were lucky enough to be squeezed in for some food as we'd arrived early. Food was absolutely fantastic, staff were very friendly and accommodating, especially considering how busy they were and the reduced staffing as a result of the latest covid outbreak which they said was hitting them hardest this time around. Really recommend though maybe book to ensure a table and to reduce stress to the staff!

This is the best food I had in the Lake District! A large group (11) of us showed up just before closing time and the staff was very accommodating. Everyone was helpful and kind. I had the Steak and Ale pie and it was just delicious. The mashed potatoes were perfect and the vegetable medley was just what I needed after all the fried food I had been having on the trip.
I tried my friend's lamb and it was to die for. The only complaint I heard was about the chutney for the vegan curry. Save room for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding was one of the best desserts I've ever had; I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

Visited: October, 2015. We got a little lost trying to find this place, but, the views were breathtaking, so, who cares. This is a most charming English pub to visit. Cozy room with fireplace. Cheerful clients. Salads to start were good. The steak pie with chips, as well as sticky toffee pudding were both excellent. Finally, they feature a solid selection of local ales, and their European wine list is short but sweet. Most definitely, worth the drive to the Kirkstile. Recommend getting a little lost, too.
