The Rookery Tucked away, only a short distance from St Paul's Cathedral, the Bank of England and the Old Bailey, the only remaining early houses in Peter's Lane have been repaired and extended to create our delightful boutique hotel. Inside, The Rookery is all period charm. Polished wood panelling, stone flagged floors, open fires and genuine antique furniture give the place a warm, homely atmosphere - more private club than hotel.
Services
We have set out to create the kind of accommodation we ourselves would love to find in the heart of one of the world's great cities. Civilised surroundings; old fashioned hospitality; friendly efficient service; a location away from the roar of traffic, but within a very short walk of the most important attractions.
Today, anyone looking for a private and discreet meeting facility need look no further than The Rookery. Our careful restoration of this picturesque row of period buildings has created a haven of calm, complemented by the highest levels of comfort and service. Our Drawing Room is a delightful meeting place for gatherings of up to fourteen people. The Library is an oak panelled room hung with period portraits and furnished with antiques, including a table for up to six people.
Why The Rookery? From the middle ages Smithfield was a bustling cattle market outside the jurisdiction of the City Guilds. This convenient lack of law enforcement attracted all manner of villains including, reputedly, Charles Dickens's immortal rascal, Fagin. Such areas became known colloquially as stews or rookeries, which were universally understood to mean 'criminal areas'.

Facilities were more effect than practicality for example hand held shower and no safe in the room. That said the room was beautiful and the bed luxurious. Guest lounges fantastic with 2 honour bars. Close to both Farringdon stations. Lots of great amenities close by.

Lovely place. Although I haven't stayed in the hotel, I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist for a free coffee. Such courtesy.

I love this place and have been lucky to stay here several times over the past 4 years or so. It's in a great location, the staff are friendly and helpful. There's the added bonus of the house cat (although I miss Lady Grey) and it's quiet. For a light sleeper, that is a real treat.

I had a wonderful stay at the Rookery and the building and interior was so beautiful and cosy. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, they made the experience very personalised and comfortable. We felt right at home. The service is great and the quality of everything is perfect. We will definitely be coming back again. Also, loved the cat

Tons of charm and the staff were wonderful. Walking distance to a lot of things, and the room and open facilities were really comfy. Bonus points to the resident cat, who's usually sleeping in the conservatory.

One of the best places I've ever stayed in. The entire hotel is absolutely lovely. The beautiful decor takes you back in time and the common lounge areas are so cosy I hardly wanted to leave the hotel during the day. The room is fantastic and the bed is so soft and comfortable. The staff are wonderful! They are all so kind and friendly and they were a big help to a solo traveller like me. Breakfast cost extra and is served to the room. I had lunch and dinner as well and the food is amazing. And Bagheera the house cat is so nice to be around!

Very nice hotel. The decor was different and pretty. There's a very friendly cat who likes pets and lives in the hotel. The staff were very nice. Very quiet at night

Wow, had the most wonderful eve/morning at the rookery in 1 of the junior suites last night. Wanted to give a big shout out to the staff who were sooo helpful, sweet and nothing was too much trouble! The rookery was a little feast for the eyes. We created some lovely pictures and Polaroids, and what a wonderful backdrop! So atmospheric, like stepping back in time, but not lacking in today's quality of luxury Thanks so so much And I'm definitely keen to come back to 1 of these hotels See you again soon

Favorite lodging choice in London. Classic colonial lodge with sitting room and full liquor cabinet for your self-service. Charming well appointed rooms. Good wifi and in the heart of bustling old London neighborhood.

A nice staff but unfortunately not the nicest of hotels in terms of comfort or amenities. Very much over the top with their faux British club decor. Nice neighborhood but overpriced and very poor in terms of comfort especially when trying to control the room temperature. We had 3 very bad nights of sleep due to extreme heat in the room.

Romantic and charming place! Nothing to complain about this place, super gentle British staff, no elevator but they offered to carry suitcases to your room, food is great, the bathroom is adventurous, the bed is heaven and the bar room downstairs has delicious drinks and a fireplace. This place feels like being in a very nice community and I recommend it for business trips and also highly for couples. I am looking forward to come back, 5 stars!

I loved my two stays at the Rookery! The staff is lovely and helpful.the hotel is phenomenally amazing.and the location couldn't be better. Just a few blocks from the Farringdon tube and rail station, the Rookery is centrally located amongst many pubs, restaurants and the business district is a short walk away. The hotel itself is like stepping back in time.but with all of the creature comforts of the modern world.

Each room is named after some colorful character from the area's past.makes the stay a little more personal in a way.you even have to ask for your room key by the person's name! They kept my bag for me (I hadn't caught up to the wheeled suitcase phenomenon yet) while I spent 2 weeks in the UK and EU.very above and beyond from service I've had at US hotels!

By the end of my 3 weeks abroad, I was missing my dog and cat quite a lot, so finding Miss Lady Grey in the lobby was a true joy. I think she knew. I'd met her briefly on the beginning of the trip but she was a bit aloof.upon my return she was much more loving and even started to try to follow me upstairs! I think she knew I was missing my "kids" and wanted to make me feel better.

The Rookery may be more than what I'm used to paying for a hotel room, but it's also more hotel than I'm used to getting. This is my place to stay in London.and I WILL be returning!

My boyfriend and I had a great stay at this hotel in August. The location is superb - literally a block from the Farringdon tube, near the Jerusalem Tavern, Starbucks, a couple of pizza places, and other nice pubs. The hotel itself is also gorgeous! We love staying in really old hotels with exposed brick and old furnishings and this completely fit the bill.

Our room was nice, the view, however, was not and the room was a little small. We didn't care too much partly because the huge bathroom with clawfoot tub made up for it, as well as the location and design of the hotel overall. We also absolutely loved Lady Grey and were upset to leave her! If I can afford to stay a second time, I would definitely return.

A friend of mine gave me a nameless cat as a gift, so I decided to take a weekend to walk the cemeteries of London to come up with a name for her. Persephone Ophelia has 8 toes on each front paw. That is how I first learned about the Rookery. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because there is no food here, and regrettably, I didn't realize that until I had already checked in.

Not even a cracker or glass of juice which is hard to grasp after hours of traveling and considering their prices for accommodations. A little pricey, even at London rates, but the ambiance, location, setting and cleanliness makes it worth every penny. The hotel is furnished with beautiful antiques and artwork. Amazingly, every corner of this place is spotless, but I never see the housekeeper which is cool; they do a nice job of streamlining the chores behind the scenes.

My favorite place here is the reading room with the fireplace. It is private and quiet, and guests typically don't go in there because it's difficult to find; I like having the room all to myself. Lastly, the best part about the Rookery is their concierge staff who will stop at nothing to make your stay as stress-free as possible. They will take care of everything from dinner reservations to show tickets to ordering food for you. The location of The Rookery is perfect for the business traveler or someone wanting to see much of London without going too far.

Genuine, small boutique hotels are actually quite difficult to find in London. There are many hotels that claim to be different but, more often than not, they all boil down to the same, formulaic blandness that is the British (and now possibly Western-world) hotel. The Rookery is, genuinely, different. For starters it's not situated in a traditionally chi-chi part of town (at least not from the guide-books' perspective). Nestled in a back lane behind the old Smithfield market, The Rookery is a maze of adjoining houses dating back 100s of years. It's all rather unassuming from the outside and I can't help but think of Dickensian bookshops whenever I walk past.

The hotel is, however, ideally placed for both the buzz of the City (Square Mile) for business and the West End for shopping and entertainment. Smithfield itself, whilst once very much a place to avoid unless you were there to trade (although what I wouldn't say!), is now a rather up and coming part of town with many refurbished flats, bars and eateries that would easily compete with the more obvious gastronomic haunts such as the South Bank wharfs, Soho and Mayfair.

Add in the fact that the nearest station is Farringdon (tube and train) with its excellent links to Kings Cross (and therefore the new St Pancras International) and I think this hotel is really likely to hit the big time soon. Whilst it's primary use is as a business retreat I'd say that this hotel was ideally suited for a romantic weekend break. It's ideally located and you're not going to feel like you have to stay in and around the hotel. If you do chose a quite night in where could be further from the hubbub that is outside?
