Not much is know about the appearance of Portaferry until the last century. We have very old buildings surviving to this day like the Castle and the Church ruins at Templecraney, but generally the buildings that were part of it. There are details, fragments of plasterwork and joinery that have survived that suggest by the middle of the 18th century the water was lined by buildings from the comer of castle street to St Patrick's Hall. Harris in 1744 describes its appearance as run down but a substantial settlement none the less.

Didn't stay over. but went for dinner in the bar/bistro. Had tried to book a table for 7.30 but was offered a table for 6.30. We got the 6 o'clock ferry and arrived at 6.17 tobe told our order couldn't be taken until 6.30. We had no problem with that but thought it quite petty. Order was taken and starters arrived, pea soup was ok but lacked seasoning.
My husband ordered crab claws which were very small and didn't have much flavour. Mains arrived. I had monkfish wrapped in parma ham which was overcooked and the red pepper dressing was very oily. All in all it was an expensive meal which I did not enjoy!

We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary with friends in the hotel, for a fabulous afternoon tea, the sandwiches were dainty, scones just the right size with cream and jam, and delicious cakes. The service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Throughly enjoyed by all Thank you Rosie and team Freda

Lovely hotel with beautiful views. Food was excellent as were the staff - they were efficient and friendly. Hotel room was bigger than expected and kids loved the bump bed in family room. Extremely clean and well maintained for an older style hotel with some lovely touches. Highly recommend and will stay again. This hotel exceeded our expectations.

Over the last month we have been visiting all the restaurants in the Portaferry/Strangford area and booked a table for two at the hotel for an evening meal. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the food was good. However, we were disappointed as the restaurant lacked any type of intimacy or ambiance as we were directed to a large table that could have seated six people.
This is a lovely hotel, and I have eaten in the bar/bistro section on previous occasions, but the restaurant itself was sparce and bland and was reminiscent of a cafe in need of a makeover rather than a hotel restaurant.

Lovely little stay by the sea. We had a friends' wedding ceremony in Portaferry and very much enjoyed our weekend at the hotel. The restaurant has a simple, enjoyable menu with daily specials and the staff is friendly and accommodating. We ordered room service a few times, which was always prompt and piping hot. The only let down was the desserts.
We didn't have more than a bite from the two we ordered. Sickly sweet and tasted as if they had just been thawed after a long life in an old freezer, but the meals are so hearty you there isn't really room for dessert. We will definitely pop back by if we ever find ourselves in Portaferry again.

Staying in the hotel for the weekend, and what a surprise! It's a real little gem spotlessly clean, with a very attentive staff, fantastic food in the restaurant (and the pub grub looks great too), and what decor! There is antique furniture everywhere each room is individual ( we have a 4 poster bed!) The only problem is that it is pouring rain outside otherwise a walk along the main street would be nice. Can see the ferry coming and going from our bedroom. This is lovely!
