Stayed here 6 years ago. It was being refurbished so was charging lower room rates. Now full price I couldn't see much difference. Room OK with slightly dated furniture and TV. Pod coffee maker was quirky. Kettle in the cupboard as a welcome alternative. Breakfast was a satisfying experience (6 years ago there was no cooked breakfast). Pleasant garden. Rear facade of hotel needs painting again.
Only 3 stars because 1) no pillow options. Only 2 quite hard pillows provided. No soft or medium option in the cupboard as many other hotels offer. 2) poor shower. Two taps for mixing and lever to switch to the shower head. Very second rate. Needs to be thermostatic single control these days. Also shower head was a cone spread with no water in the middle! Hopeless.

Had dinner in the Ballantyne Bar and it was very disappointing. The fish on the fish and chips was overcooked. The batter was dark brown. The burger was so overcooked it was barely edible. We had been prewarned that they were short staffed in the kitchen. But they apparently neglected to mention that short staffed meant "no chef". We will not be returning.

Overpriced wine menu, and website menu is not reflective of what the dinner menu actually is. Thought the Manager had a "could not care less attitude" when I complained about the price of the wine, my fault I should have asked to see the wine menu before ordering a glass. I usually have lunch there every week, but will never go back.

Ordered from the bar menu. Large portions which sounds great but can be a bit overwhelming when you are trying to eat your way through it. I had the salmon starter. Salmon was nice but the crisp bread accompaniment was like chewing your way through sandpaper. Rissoto starter was plentiful and tasty. Duck starter also good. Steaks large and plenty sides. Turkey from the Xmas menu was okay. Staff were very good. Welcoming and attentive. Prices are reasonable.

An enjoyable stay overall. Friendly welcome on check in. The room was clean. The bathroom had been recently renovated. Breakfast was good and a few different choices available. We were able to park in the adjoining car park without issue. One small issue was we could hear the kitchen door repeatedly banging below our room but it was somewhat faint and did not interfere with our sleeping. We would stay again.

Large rambling old building with lots of character. Reception staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are furnished to a reasonable standard, although some are rather small. Restaurant serves good food (mostly, a friend of mine had a haddock for breakfast that was still frozen in the middle) although the waiting staff are a little off-hand sometimes this may just be lack of training. Good value for money.
