Services
The Old Lockup is situated in the picturesque Derbyshire Dales market town of Wirksworth, on the edge of the Peak District National Park. The Old Lockup is an ideal location for exploring the unique landscape of the Derbyshire countryside, walking or cycling the High Peak Trail, or enjoying the many watersports on offer at nearby Carsington Reservoir.
We brewed for 3 years our Jailbird Pale winning best light beer at Chesterfield Real Ale Festival in 2017. Our plan was always to establish a range of beers but only after thoroughly testing each new recipe. The range included Jailbreak, a traditional bitter, Jailbird pale ale, No Prisoners strong IPA, Strong Arm of the Law winter ale, Black Maria porter and On Parole stout. We brewed using Derbyshire water and we used all-British ingredients whenever possible.
The Old Lockup has been sensitively refurbished to combine its historic original features with modern convenience. Its four spacious en-suite bedrooms are individually styled and furnished, complete with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The Magistrates Room would have housed the man charged with upholding the law before the police moved out from London to the Shire Counties in the 1850's.

What can I say. I would definitely recommend this bed and breakfast. Was taken away for a surprise and the place played a big part in a great weekend. Wonderful greeting by the owner. Our room was amazing and the history of the building is fabulous. Breakfasts were so very good. We didnt eat on the evening but when we visit again, which we will, we will definitely try the evening meal.
Also dog friendly which is really important to us. Our dog stayed in the room at breakfast time but we would expect this. Gem of a place. Situated in a great village too with plenty of dog walks.

Excellent accommodation with a quirky twist. Tim the host is an absolute gentleman who, although we arrived 1/2 an hour early made us a very welcome cup (proper China service) of tea and slice of cake. A converted gaol house with 2 ft thick stone walls was festooned with police memorabilia, not to mention a fair amount of music memorabilia. We stayed in the well appointed "solicitors room" a welcome alternative to faceless corporate establishments.
The breakfast choice was superb with special mention for his home made bread, that I would have gladly taken a loaf home lol Set on the edge of the stunning scenery of Derbyshire's Peak District I would unreservedly recommend "The Old Lockup" to any traveller

Quirky and unique place with some history, absolutely loved it. The room (I stayed in the Magistrates Room) was clean, well presented and very comfortable. The owner, Tim, was very helpful, offering a cuppa and a cake on arrival so we could relax as soon as we arrived. I would stay again for sure. Oh and the breakfast was very tasty and good quality. Visit the Star Disc while you are there, a lovely walk and beautiful views.

Arriving for a three night stay, our host Tim welcomed us with tea/coffee and cake. We found our room to be most satisfactory in a unique and interesting establishment. Everything was to a high standard and all the food was deliciously prepared, cooked and served by our host. We enjoyed three evening meals and three breakfasts, all different, and for us, the homemade bread alone was worth going for. We had a most relaxing and enjoyable stay and the town of Wirksworth is a very interesting place. Well worth the visit.

We were made really welcome. Tim, our host was extremely obliging, providing us with an excellent family meal. The sitting room was comfortable and warm. A most welcome tray of tea and chocolate fudge cake was thoroughly enjoyed, and came as an unexpected extra. Our room was really peaceful, and we hope to visit again.
