Middlethorpe Hall is a William III country house just two miles from York's city centre, yet is set in 20 acres of its own beautiful gardens and parkland - the best of both city and country. Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, and today it is renowned for its excellent food, luxurious accommodation and boutique Spa.

Middlethorpe Hall has achieved a graceful transition from country house to first-class hotel without losing its character. The restoration, conservation and conversion into a country house hotel has been carried out to exacting and historically accurate standards. It has been elegantly decorated in the manner of the 18th Century and furnished with antiques and fine paintings, so that its look and ambiance is that of a well-kept, well-furnished private manor house rather than a 29 bedroom Hotel (ten rooms and suites in the house, and nineteen in the adjacent 18th Century courtyard).
Middlethorpe is a plantsman's garden full of unusual and interesting treasures scattered throughout a maze of small gardens. The gardens have been extensively restored and replanted since the property was acquired in 1980. There are many specimen trees, including a Cedar al Lebanon on the main lawn, a mature Red Oak in the Spring Garden, and a Turkey Oak all of which remain from the original garden.
Middlethorpe Hall is known for its comfortable, luxurious atmosphere and the 29 guest rooms and suites in the main house and Courtyard are no exception. We have taken the best advice to ensure everything is in place for your visit that will be as safe as it will be comfortable and enjoyable. Located on the first floor, our main house suites have large sash windows with views over the south lawn and gardens. Four spacious suites located in the C18th Courtyard, with names connected to the history of Middlethorpe.

A luxury to be able stay in one of only 3 NT hotels in the country. We were warmly welcomed on hour arrival and promptly upgraded to the Lady Mary Suite was exquisite with a lovely view of the garden. After having tea in the beautiful library we strolled around the gardens which helped to relax us after our journey. Unfortunately the restaurant was not open, but was certainly made up for by a hearty breakfast. Staff were first class and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you Middlethorpe I am sure we will be back.

Middlethorpe hall hotel is a beautiful place to stay with so much history and character. The staff who work there are so professional, friendly and attentive. The food is nothing short of outstanding created by a team of very talented chefs. We would have no hesitation in staying at this high class hotel again. My wife and I have had an excellent stay for the second time of which will stay with us for a very long time.

Went for Sunday lunch to celebrate my parents 53rd wedding anniversary. As always, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food is always excellent and today was no exception. Beautifully presented, the attention to detail in taste, texture and visual appeal is fantastic. Vegetable sides can sometimes be an after thought but even these were faultless and everything was seasoned perfectly. They have some serious talent in the pastry section too. It's not cheap - 40 for 3 courses- plus drinks & service charge but I thoroughly recommend for a special occasion.

We stayed at this wonderful hotel for three nights. Breakfast was excellent and all the staff were very helpful and professional. The room pleasant and spotless. The toiletries bathrobes fruit and tea and coffee making facilities in the room were good. The only thing that came as a surprise, to put it mildly was the cost of 4 coffees at a few pence short of 30. Who would believe it? We want to support British tourism and expect to pay a premium for a luxury hotel such as Middlethorpe but a simple cup of coffee is just that, simple.

Have just had the most fantastic christmas break at Middlethorpe Hall, christmas eve to boxing day inclusive. It was fabulous from start to finish, excellent attention to detail and the most gorgeous food and champagne, it was without question the loveliest christmas. All staff were superb and the planning and execution of the three days made it appear seamless. Thoroughly enjoyed it, thank you to all.

The last time we visited Middlethorpe Hall was eighteen years ago. A sexy new Jasper blue Mercedes CLK hot out of Stuttgart and our dear friends Sheila and John made it memorable in many ways, but not particularly the food. Today we return for birthday reasons and really enjoy the experience. Covid security is reassuringly some of the best we've seen anywhere recently.
It sets the barre for the rest of lunch. Whist the lounge is impressive it's quite chilly, but house champagne takes our mind off that, and soon we're escorted through to the delightfully panelled dining room. Starters are pork belly with black pudding and cured salmon with horseradish and beetroot. Both very tasty and impeccably prepared. Sunday roast beef is sort of obligatory, so we oblige with Sirloin medium rare and proper rare.
Both are perfectly cooked for our tastes. Plenty of veggies, all good, noteworthy are creamed leeks gratin and possibly the best roast potatoes in a restaurant setting ever. Yes - ever. The splendid Katnook Estate merlot was one of many excellent wines on a really good list. Pudding was lovely but maybe not awesome - passion fruit tarte with excellent pastry was perhaps a little bette than the fig parfait but it's all relative and this is not a grumble. Excellent service though out, we will certainly not leave it so long next time.

This was a delight. We booked afternoon tea and our experience from parking the car to leaving for home was first class. Attention to detail and service was outstanding. Afternoon tea was exactly what we expected, the service was to silver service standard, the hall was a lovely place and the gardens were an amazing bonus that we didn't expect. I would highly recommend Middlethorpe and we intend to make a return visit as soon as we can

Special birthday weekend away treat for my friend. Jose & the staff were fantastic, they could not do enough for us. The food was outstanding, the raspberry souffle was the best I've ever tasted. The extensive gardens are a must, absolutely beautiful. Thank you again for making our weekend away so very special.

Lovely setting, great staff and the suites and facilities are superb. The spa is heavenly and the fine dining is sublime. Would wholeheartedly recommend. Great links to York. Good for couples, families and those with dogs. Lovely walks across the racecourse or along the river. Transpenine trail is virtually on the doorstep. Will definitely return!

I can not think of any suggestions for improvements. The welcome is always great, the staff are professional, you are free to explore the hotel grounds and gardens, the various bedrooms are all so different in character and the breakfast in the morning is impressive. There are no hidden costs. Parking, wi- fi, tea/ coffee and leisure facilities are included in the price. We have returned here so many times and will always want to.

While planning our trip to the UK this past summer, my daughter and I wanted to either stay at a Manor house or Castle. Middlethorpe Hall was the perfect choice. It is several miles outside York, but less than 10 minutes by uber or taxi. The staff was gracious and solicitous. We arrived just in time for tea. The food was fantastic, generous, and the location in the the ball room facing the beautiful green lawn was exactly what we had hoped for.
Our room was not in the main house, but in another building out near the gardens. It was olderwhat is what you would expect, but charming and very comfortable. We especially loved the fresh water, biscuits, and towel warmer. The gardens were stunning and very well kept. The only downside is the ambient noise from the highway that is just at the end of the park, but that really isn't their fault. I would highly recommend Middlethorpe Hall and would stay here again, and again, and again.

We went to the restaurant at Middlethorpe hall yesterday. We started with a g and t on the Veranda over look the lovely gardens. The evening was warm the waiters took us through the menu and we soaked up the atmosphere, it was lovely. After a while we went through into the dining area it's well appointed and the tables are distant enough to be enjoyable.
Not like some restaurants where you are crammed in. The food is some of the best I have eaten in my life. It's not cheap but then when you compare it to other venues the quality of what you get justifies the price. The duck I had, I think was 23 was the most succulent I have ever had and very flavoursome. The service is top quality, a great place to eat. You must do it at least once

Stayed at this hotel 3 weeks ago whilst attending a seminar in York. It has reasonably good standards and has many original features dating back to 1699. It used to be master cutler(from sheffield) residence. The rooms although nice, spacious and fully equiped are bit 80 ish in furnishings. This hotel also has a spa, which I did not try because I forgot my shorts. This would be a good venue for couples on a quiet couple of days away, although I was there on business, I noticed mostly couples were there. Lovely gardens.
