The Hoops Inn has been a landmark on the main route from North Devon via Clovelly to Cornwall for as long as anyone can remember. In fact there has been a hostelry on this spot welcoming travellers to this beautiful and remote part of the English countryside since the 13th Century. Today, under the stewardship of the new owners Gerry and Dee Goodwin, The Hoops is still a beacon to both locals and visitors wishing to find great food & drink, a warm welcome and stylish accommodation.

Just back from a Sunday lunch celebration from the Hoops Inn. Lovely location & beautiful building. Booked a week ahead for a restaurant table. Our group ordered 3 roast dinners, a fish alternative and the gluten free roast. We all agreed that the food was excellent and that the GF offerings were excellent. It took a bit of time for the food to arrive but worth the wait. Special mention to the staff who were lovely. Thx.

Called in late for Sunday roast. Pleased to find the full menu was still available. Plenty of convenient parking at the rear with adjacent dog paddock for our four-legged friend. Exemplary service from friendly staff. We had options for inside and outside seating. The food (roast chicken & roast beef) was perfectly cooked and delicious. Our young waiter, George, was attentive, polite and particularly helpful. We will be back. Thank you.

We made our reservation over the phone with Olivia who was very helpful during the booking and also during our short stay at the hotel. The staff were very attentive and polite and the food in the bar/restaurant was very good. On our journey down to Devon we were contacted by the Hotel to see if we wanted to reserve a table in the restaurant that evening which was much appreciated. Will definitely stay again when in the area.

Stayed here with three friends and we were utterly delighted. Wonderful old world atmosphere in a quiet location with an interesting layout. everything was perfect from the service to the accommodation to the food. Excellent range of ales and in top condition. We all agreed that we hit the jackpot and a private car park at the rear was a big bonus.

OCT x4 Excellent room and fab breakfast. Evening menu provided limited choice and portions were a challenge. A more simple/homely option of 'pie n mash' or similar, would be a good addition. Menu enables Chefs to demonstrate their skills and imagination, however they need to cater for diners with a less adventurous taste. Having to book a table in the bar, for the evening, just to have a drink was inconvenient. How about room guests being able to use library/lounge for an evening drink? All staff very friendly and helpful. Would happily stay again if visiting area in future.

Great stay - very different to what we'd usually go for but it was a delight. We paid a bit extra for the suit and it was worth it - a four poster bed and a jacuzzi bath for a treat. Breakfast was included and filled me up for the day - no complaints - all delicious. We also had food at the pub the night before and again, lovely food. The staff were friendly and the room was clean. Really nice quirky place to go. Would like to stay again.

On our first night we popped in here on the off chance that they would fit in two oldies. They did and we had a really nice little table in one of the bar areas. That young lady was so friendly. We were told that the method of getting food and drink was to order at the bar with your table number. Menus at the table for us to browse. Drinks arrived immediately and we ordered mussels in white wine.
They arrived in a mound of steaming sauce. A sauce, I must admit was difficult to beat. Delicious. Having seen how busy this restaurant was I decided to reserve a table for our last night. There was a choice of bar or restaurant area. I chose restaurant, for a change. We arrived to be shown to a bay window table, perfect. Having viewed the menu we ordered drinks and, as we were ready, our meals.
Our big mistake. I enjoy a drink of my vodka on ice before eating. The starters arrived of salmon parcel and my chicken live pate. No drinks, as yet. My partner had finished her starter before her wine turned up. OK, leave it at that, a mistake. Next our main course of steak arrived. Unfortunately, mine was so tough. I thought it was me but my partner tried a piece and agreed with me.
I left it. We are not the type to make a fuss so left it at that. The waitress, bless her, noticed and asked the problem. She reported to management and, thankfully, they took my steak off the final account and offered free deserts. We chose free coffees. One other point, seems I am a non-stop moaner which I am not, bread should have been served at the start so my partner had some with her starter, not when the steak arrived. OK, rant over. No-one can tell what a steak will be like until you eat it.
Management dealt with our 'problem' in an exemplary way. Thank you. The young waitress was swept off her feet so the late drinks and bread was unfortunate. She dealt with the situation very professionally. Finally, we will be back. That is a promise. Love the restaurant. Love the staff. Leaving it at that so one star lost from the first night of mussels.

By far my favorite place to eat in Devon! Amazing food and the wait staff is always courteous and prompt with requests. EAting int he dinning room is lovely but if they are booked up or you just want a quick bite the bar is just as nice. If it's available go with the chicken and mustard mash. It's out of this world! I was so sad when they were closed due to the fire, but they are once again open and back to serving up delicious eats.

We dropped in here as it has real 'curb appeal'- pretty thatched roof, lovely flowers, busy. And we were pleased we did- the menu is local and varied, my mussels and chips were fantastic. Portions were generous- but I still wanted more as it was so yummy! 2 main courses and 2 pints of cider came to 30 pounds- which seemed pretty average in this area- as it is quite touristy.
They push their winelist heavily- claiming it is the best in north devon- but as it was lunch i didnt try any so cant comment- other than to say it was pretty long and seemed well priced

I visted the Hoops Inn whilst on holiday. Close to where we were staying we went in expecting an average hotel restaurant. But we got lucky and dined in an understated gastro pub. The interior is old school, traditional pub. The vibe is laid back, quiet local pub. We ordered some drinks and perused the menu. The other diners seemed to be couples or foursomes.
I elected for the fish and chips from the menu whish focussed on English cooking. When my meal arrived I was surprised by the large fish and lovely hand cut home made chips. Despite being full I also went for a fruit crumble for dessert and enjoyed that too. The food was simply but well prepared with good quality ingredients. The service was good too. This was one of the best places I ate at whilst on holiday in North Devon and would recommend it whole heartedly. Good food, good beer and good portions.
