Very well maintained gardens, tasteful front of house, friendly, helpful staff, spacious rooms which are very clean, great views ( if choosing a sea view) lovely breakfast in a restaurant setting. Stayed in some of Devon's supposedly prestigious luxury hotels which could learn something from the Commodore

If you cannot travel to the South of France then visit The Commodore Hotel. While you relax and enjoy the wonderful food (I had the Chicken and Mash so much meat very tasty) look out across the mouth of the river Torridge towards The little fishing village of Appledore. Enjoy a drink and take the time to watch the tide change as the distant cottages start to light up in the evening. This Hotel is family owned and run, the owners and staff are friendly helpful and knowledgeable of the area. You will find like me dreams of distant lands

Attended a funeral wake here. A high tea, with wine for a toast was provided. We were very impressed with our reception by the staff, by the quality of the food, and the lovely comfortable room we were able to meet in. Sad circumstances, but, a highly recommended place for holidays, meals, and any other visits, or gathering.

The room and en-suite bathroom was truly spotless, and the quality of pillows, duvet and bed, impeccable. Not a sound to be heard at night. Excellent complimentary biscuits and sufficient teabags. I turned up late, as my stay was not planned, but I was quickly welcomed by efficient lady at front desk. In order to have been awarded 10/10, I would have wished for a coffee plunger and ground coffee in my bedroom.
If the lady at the front desk had asked me, when I checked in, if I had all that I might need for a comfortable overnight, then I would have said that I had no toiletries. I was unaware that I could have requested some off house service, and thus was disappointed that I left feeling unshaven and with no minty toothpaste taste! Breakfast starts at 8am here; Given that I am an early riser, it would have been wonderful if there was a note in the room, inviting me, should I so wish, to be able to sit quietly in the breakfast room, from 7am, and have use of a thermos of coffee/ Tea, which might have been put out at 7am.
This may be a lot to ask, but is happily provided by UK's top Hotels, and the Commodore deserves to only be compared with the best in the land, As a final comment, I'd have liked to see a note in the bathroom, inviting people to reduce towel usage.and thus washing requirements. Environmental concerns are shared by most of the public too, now. My breakfast was delicious.
I had salmon with a perfectly poached free range egg, cereal and Toast. I feel I got true value for money. The fare is strong, at 115/smallish en-suite double bed, but I left feeling I had been well cared for. Thankyou

A lovely few days away with friends at the Commodore, where James and his family and team were so attentive and couldn't do more to make our stay perfect. The common areas of the hotel are beautifully decorated and bright and airy. We hope they continue to refurbish the bedrooms, as some are quite dated although very clean, comfortable and all in good working order. Jan(?) in the restaurant/bar works so hard and both she and James bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable. The evening meal was top quality. Lisa on reception desk ensured our trip was all booked as we wished, right from the initial contact. Really recommend this hotel!
