Located in the centre of Rye, East Sussex, the hotel was renovated to create one of the most stunning hideaways on the south coast. The building dates from 1575 and has enviable heritage; it even has an original Georgian ballroom used for lavish weddings and banquets. An eclectic and contemporary design has been given to this historic fabric using a wide range of antique and modern furniture, materials and art. The result is a comfortable blend of old and new, creating an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual.

I had high hopes about The George as its recent reopening was creating a buzz around the town. I called in for breakfast and was directed to a seperate dining area for non-residents. There was a warm welcome from the staff and the service was professional. However my cooked breakfast was a let down. The bacon was overcooked; dry and brittle. The sausage was also cremated; the skin having developed a thick dry crust.
The waitress told me everything was cooked to order, which was hard to believe. Furthermore no toast is included, which I feel is stingy with the price of the breakfast at 12.95. I left hungry and disappointed.

The George has reopened after the fire. It looks great from the outside, inside there's wooden beams, the bar area has a large area with tables and little areas screened off for those wanting privacy. The bar is dog friendly. The bar has 17 wines on tap and a great selection of local real ales. Cellarhead, Three legs, Brewing Brothers and Curious Brew and Camber to name a few. 14 Cocktails available at the moment but that's going to grow.
On the grand opening there was Adam bar manager and 4 staff Hamish and Hussain to name a couple the service was excellent. Had I had my George card you get 10% off food and drink. I have been back 3 times since during the week it re -opened and haven't had a bad pint yet. I recommend you try Cellarhead and Brewing Brothers Wrights pale. During the week days there's less bar staff on duty.
So if someone wants a cocktail you may experience a slight wait. I have not tried the restaurant yet as it was fully booked on opening day. Don't forget to apply for your George card as it's 10% off Food & Drink.

Visited the grill restaurant on Sunday evening: 2 adults and 2 children (aged 11 & 9). Food was delicious and although no specific Children's menu the kids found something they could enjoy (king prawns for one and fish & chips for the other). Food was comparable to what we've enjoyed here previously, but the service wasn't perfect which you expect when paying the prices on their menu; we had to ask for more water several times, bread which we'd ordered that didn't arrive with the other starters and no butter/oil when it did arrive. Overall, a nice meal but they either need more waiting staff or they need to up their game with the ones they have, wasn't as flawless as we've experienced in other comparably priced restaurants. Aware is has recently been refurbished and re-opened, so let's hope these are initial teething challenges and that they can fix this quickly.

The bar staff were rude and unhelpful and quite frankly unprofessional. It seemed that most people behind the bar were new with no previous experience of even working in a bar. We had made a booking over the phone prior to coming for dinner at 5pm but when we got there we were told a variety of timings for the opening of your kitchen to eventually find out that it opens at 6pm.
Your online menu clearly states it's an all day menu. Your bar staff barely even bothered to acknowledge our existence which we complained about to your receptionist. The bar person with the most experience who was training the others did make a good cocktail but that's really the only good thing I can say. We waited for food until 6pm at which point the bar had filled up with other people who were taken care of straight away for food whilst we were still completely ignored so we left and came back to Brighton.
I understand you have recently re-opened but the norm is to train your staff properly before opening, not when you've been open a few weeks and in the half term holiday. Your staff are the beating heart and personality of your brand so it was incredibly disappointing as a first time back after the refurb. We had been many times prior and didn't have any issues at all.

Hello there. I've been a customer of The George for over 16 years. I loved it there - couldn't wait for you to reopen - even had my 60 birthday in the function room - lovely The dining rooms look gorgeous. The bedrooms from website look fab However, very disappointed when I came for a Bloody Mary the other day with a friend - who has also been a customer for longer than me We had a coffee in the cafe next door first.
I'm sorry to say it was awful. In such a large cup and tasteless coffee. The vine and White House have great coffee. I make better coffee at home with supermarket pods! Also the seats with the black rippled seats so very rock hard and uncomfortable. Who chose those? They look stylish but. We then went into the bar of the George what a shame you have got rid of the round table by the lovely window and boxed off the other area in front of the fire.
In the boxed in ate the tables and seats are squashed in and if there were a lot of people very difficult to get in and out of seats - one would have to ask people to move in most situation that's of the void get themselves seated in the first place I suggest taking at least one table away. Why box it in anyway - it's awful. Please take it down - so much nicer before when it was an open plan and one could see the bar - the stain glass windows - lovely but the art on the walls just doesn't work. Suede on seats looks nice for now - but grease and other things - it will soon look dreadful!
There was already a mark where I sat. Seats not deep enough either Chairs cheap school chairs or church chairs This takes me onto the Bloody Mary. It was watery cheap tomato juice - only had Tabasco in it and celery - completely tasteless Do you train your staff? I know it's hard to get staff. The chap behind the bar looked as if he had slept in his trousers. Screwed up and definitely could do with an iron We spoke to the manager who gave us a complimentary wine when I asked - compensation for the pricey not tasty Bloody Mary's Tomato juice good one or B8 Worcester sauce Tabasco Ice Celery Slice of lemon And celery salt it's easy I've been in catering/hospitality most of my life - I am 70. Disappointed from Rye

Popped into to have a look at the newly refurbished Hotel. It looks amazing. Unfortunately the service at the bar was not a nice experience.bar staff were chatting between themselves, took our money before they even gave us a drink.the beer we wanted, the barrel needed changing, so they asked if we'd have something else, the diet coke was flat, and the two coffees were bought to our table nearly cold.definitely room for improvement in this area.

Newly reopened. Had drinks in the outside patio, which was lovely. The newly planted pine trees looked great but we sat near them and they are really painful in one's back. Stay away from them. Tables very tightly packed and almost impossible to go to the bar/toilet once seated. Will visit again but will choose seating more carefully.

Today my partner and I returned to The George Inn Rye to support them as they reopened last week. We loved our visit three years ago but our lunch visit today was even more spectacular! The food was exquisite, the atmosphere relaxed and the staff were just wonderful - we could not recommend them enough! Thank you The George Inn Rye, we will be back :

We had a fantastic two night stay in a lovely but smallish room overlooking the main road. As the weather was poor and overcast the room seemed quite dark with its William Morris green wallpaper and matching paintwork. It wasn't helped by the constantly flickering main light bulbs which we had to turn off. The overhead paintwork looked a bit rushed and bits were missing or overlapped.
Our bed was large and comfortable with very nice linen. The en suite shower and toilet area was lovely and a fantastic shower can be had; towels were soft and plentiful. I didn't like the tea/coffee box which could be found at the bottom of the coat press. Not very practical for anyone with a bad back! Would be better situated on a shelf adjacent to the television.
Noise level from the late night roadworks (totally stripping and resurfacing the roadway) outside of the hotel over both nights of our stay couldn't be helped but a good night's sleep was had after midnight. The food was as excellent as it has always been and the new staff dealt with their tasks in a friendly manner. Experience will only bring improvement as they grow into their jobs.
It would be nice to see a salt marsh lamb on the menu and perhaps a daily special. However, the beef, fish and crustacean dishes will keep any diner happy for the duration of their stay. I was pleased to see any small errors quickly repaired with a smile. We made good use of our Dragon Card, availing ourselves of 10% off our food bill. A great innovation.
All in all, we had another lovely two night stay, our long awaited first since before the Great Fire, and will certainly return to enjoy another short break in the near future. We wish the owners and staff all the very best for the future.

I hold the hotel attached to this restaurant in very high regard, but my opinion of The George restaurant is somewhat lower. We've sampled the dinner and the breakfast here and neither was memorable. At dinner, we had a slightly stringy ribeye that the kitchen would only offer done medium, and a nice spatchcock chicken in a pleasant tarragon sauce.
The affogato we shared for dessert wasn't bad at all but the advertised cardamom ice cream didn't really taste of spice. It might be that flavoured ice cream in an affogato is a bad idea from the get, given that you're going to pour espresso over the thing -- it'd have to be marmite flavoured for any of that taste to get through.
Breakfast the next morning featured a disappointing eggs benedict whose yolks were as well-cooked as the previous night's steak. The coffee to wash it down with was anemic -- though we learned that decent coffee is pretty rare in Rye generally, aside from strong stuff at The Apothecary down the high street. I don't want to be too down on The George.
I adore the hotel, the staff are lovely, and menu incidentals like chips and sauces are all top-notch. But the quality of the hotel leaves one expecting the restaurant to hit a higher standard.

The George in Rye is a beautiful Villa, Well Built and really Comfortable. I love this place and if I am ever round the area again on business I would 100% stay here everytime. I travel a lot, I have been to Dubai a good 7 times and when there I stay at a place called the sapphire villa, This is another amazing Villa check them both out!

I recognise some of Getup_Early's description (nice room and bathroom, although the unheated bathroom was freezing in winter) but have to disagree on the restaurant. I found the food poor and expensive. The young staff are very friendly and make up in enthusiasm what they lack in experience. Management seem largely absent and this is reflected in some aspects of service and efficiency. More attention seems to have been paid to form than to substance.

A welcomed addition to Rye's Hotel list (I have been coming to Rye for years and believe me, it was screaming out for something like this to happen!) This place has all the old fashioned charm you would want when staying in a Medieval town like Rye, but thankfully with the modern chic-ness of a top London boutique Hotel! It's really cosy, our room was stunning with a bathroom to match.
They are all individually designed, so if they are anything like the room we stayed in I don't know how anyone could be disappointed. The restaurant is top notch, so much so I am going to put a review for that on Qype separately!
