The Dragon is a hotel/restaurant serving great food and the staff are undoubtedly the friendliest and most welcoming I have experienced.' The nearby castle was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's men in 1648 during the English Civil War. It is believed that some of the materials used for the completion of the hotel came from the castle ruins, including a number of the exposed beams seen throughout the hotel. The hotel is located in the attractive little town of Montgomery, in the heart of the beautiful Mid Wales countryside and is owned by a group of local families.
Services
Extra beds: Put-you-up beds are available for some rooms to accommodate children for an extra 20 per night bed and breakfast. Dogs: Dogs are welcome (though not in Premium or Superior rooms, or in the Bistro dining room). 10 per night (15 for two dogs). Please bring your own dog bedding/cages and only use dry dog food in the rooms.
The hotel's food is freshly-prepared and lovingly cooked by our excellent team. Our Bistro has built up an enviable reputation for food in the area over a number of years. You can choose to eat in our Bistro dining room, the bar or our Dragon's 'Den'. Lunches: extra items are also available at lunch time from our lunch only menu which provides baguettes, salads, omelettes etc.
Real Ales We always have four real ales on tap - one from the Montgomery Brewery, Monty's, another from local brewery, Salopian and then two other guest beers. We take care to ensure that there is a different range of tastes for real ale connoisseurs from light, hoppy, fruity ones through to dark malty porter type ales.
Currently, the pool is not open to non-residents, but this will be reviewed at a later date. The pool is heated to a temperature of between 26 degrees and 30 degrees, making it comfortable for both active swimmers and families. Use of our pool is free to guests, and is generally open daily between 8am to 11am and again from 3pm to 10pm, for exclusive hourly slots. As most of our rooms are doubles or twins, then we can cater for large groups of 30 plus - this would need to be booked some time in advance.

A great deal of character. A wonderful black and white timbered coaching Inn. Now an updated Hotel with library bar, restaurant, pool, and 20+ rooms. Some with baths and others not as it is undergoing gradual upgrading. Located in a prosperous Georgian town with a famous iron monger and hosting a bookfest. Montgomery is a bit special. Surrounded by an old estate so the trees and park surrounds are beautiful. With a fabulous cricket ground. We are a group walking Offa's Dyke which runs a km from it.

We attended for a Golden Wedding anniversary, but didn't stay in the hotel for the night, so I haven't rated the rooms. It's a beautiful venue with a lovely ambience. There was a small buffet laid on and it was delicious. Rather than being over faced with choice, there was a selection of fresh sandwiches, with tasty fillings. Some of the finest, artisan sausage rolls I've ever tasted and freshly prepared salads and coleslaw. They have a great selection of locally brewed cask ales and the beer was kept very well. I'd highly recommend this venue for food and drink with friends and family.

Good location and relaxing atmosphere. Unfortunately if you want a Sunday lunch make sure you book in advance and read details on restaurant opening and closing times. We didn't and was out most of day came back thinking we could have a Sunday roast( not the case) our own fault though. Was told the local spar has sandwiches? Eeks not very helpful although there's a great pub 10 mins drive away called the Raven in Welshpool that served Sunday lunches until 9.30.pm and was lovley with an excellent service, so not a total disaster.

Bedrooms were very basic. Our bedroom was not set up as asked. The food was very ordinary. Sent back a meal as there was a hair stuck to the plate. They offered to replace the meal but it was too late then. The meal was not charged for. No key for the room so had to be opened by a member of staff every time. Many apologies were made but definitely not up to expectations.

I can only speak for the restaurant, as I haven't stayed in the rooms. But the restaurant was beyond all of my expectations. I've been in some amazingly good restaurants, but the food here has changed my standards. I have half a mind to go back and deduct a star from every other place I've ever reviewed!

Just had an excellent Sunday lunch here. Fresh veg (7 different veg) a generous helping of roast beef and an enormous Yorkshire pudding! Very good value for such a nicely cooked meal. Plus a delicious cheesecake to follow! And extremely friendly helpful staff. Thank you Rachel and Conor and all the others. We look forward to seeing you again.

Stayed here last week for 1 night whilst on business was in room 17. Certainly an interesting room being up in the eves with a beam at 5ft off the ground between the bedroom and bathroom area. The bed seemed to be a spring mattress and the frame to have springs underneath as well which meant that it squeaked every time I rolled over in my sleep which woke me up.
The shower didn't appear to work so I had to run a speedy bath in the morning which thankfully was warm, otherwise the room was good for my trip. The food and drink throughout my stay was very good and the staff were attentive which went some way to make up for the room.
