Pilgrims slept here! This 1438 building pre-dates even the adjoining sculpted Cathedral Gateway. The Cathedral itself is just 30 paces away as is the bustling commerce of the Buttermarket and a wealth of busy shops, cafes and restaurants. Despite our central location in the pedestrianised city centre, guests may drive to the front door for unloading before going on to park.
Services
All our rooms are unique. They either have four-poster beds, sleigh beds, or beds without a foot-end for the taller person. Some of the rooms have walk in showers, others baths and showers or a bath only. Some face the rear of the hotel, some the Cathedral and some have a street facing view. For those on a tighter budget we also have rooms with shared bathroom facilities.
Canterbury is a historic Cathedral city which lies on the Great Stour and is encircled by ancient Roman walls. The city is host to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Cathedral itself, the ruins of St. Augustine's Abbey and St. Martin's Church which was built in Saxon times. Today Canterbury offers a wide variety of attractions from the award winning Marlowe Theatre, to numerous restaurants, bars and fantastic shopping! All within walking distance of our hotel. The Cathedral City of Canterbury was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages.
From Gatwick or Heathrow you can travel by public transport, hire a car or book a taxi. If coming by taxi we would recommend Greenlight taxis who are reliable and competitively priced! If you are arriving by car, we have discounted parking vouchers for the local ANPR car parks. The nearest car park is Queeningate, 21 Lower Bridge Street, CT1 2LX, which is approximately a three minutes' walk away from the hotel. The vouchers are electronic so you can go directly to the car park and telephone the hotel to obtain the voucher.

Very old (1438) hotel with lots of charm. Obviously no lifts and the floors are uneven for those less stable on their feet. However, you are in the centre of Canterbury with the cathedral visitor's office right next door. Our room "Barn" was at the top of the hotel and was spacious with a decent bathroom. You fill up the hotel's water bottles for drinking (still or sparkling) water and even the plastic glasses are compostable!
The staff were all friendly and helpful. There is no parking at the hotel but there is a car park (Queningate) a five minute walk down Burgate. The deal with the hotel means you pay ten pounds per night. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The "continental" breakfast was excellent including yoghurt, fresh fruit, cereals, croissants, bacon baguette, tea, coffee and juice. Plenty of restaurants and bars within a short walk of this attractive corner of Canterbury. Highly recommended.

"Quaint" would describe this hotel, but that is all. The floors are all uneven in every direction. Our room, the barn, was small with no desk and minimal facilities in the bathroom. There are stairs everywhere, including getting to the reception area. The staff are very friendly and the owners work hard to please. The location is great, but Canterbury is a small city, so any hotel near the city center would be close enough to everything in town. I can't imagine how people gave this hotel such high ratings.

Definitely different from a chain hotel, with so much character from the uneven floors and ceilings! This hotel appeals if you like that, and if you can manage going up and down the stairs because there is no lift (elevator). No parking either, though the hotel issues a permit allowing 24 hours in several public car parks. Once you've accepted that, the room is small but clean, the staff are helpful and friendly, breakfast is plentiful, the location is perfect, and for me the price represents great value.

It was really great to return to the Cathedral Gate, post lockdown and I am glad to say that it was as good as ever with spotless rooms and facilities. It was great to see Landlady Debbie again and receptionist Monica as well as a new member of staff a really nice young lady from Portugal. The continental breakfast is the best anywhere. Its location beside the Cathedral is unbeatable. Highly recommended!

My hubby and I had a lovely night's stay here. The man on reception was witty and welcoming and the lovely lady the following morning kindly kept my charger aside that I'd left behind by mistake without noticing. The room was spacious with a lovely view down to the street below and sash windows - we felt like we were right in the heart of Canterbury.
We had our breakfast in the room, a generous selection of warm croissants, yoghurts and fresh fruit. The bathroom was nice - thoughtful touches like leaving the default setting to bath are appreciated (I've been got in the head with shower water so many times in hotels - you'd think I'd learn!). Everything clean and tidy and well organised in a practical, user friendly way. Fantastic value for money too - I've stayed here twice now - once for my hen party with friends and this time with my hubby - and can't rate this hotel highly enough.
We'd actually left a 'posher' hotel in the high street and checked into Canterbury Gate at the last minute and were so pleased we did - it absolutely turned our weekend away around. Thank you!

Staff helpful as driving to the hotel and parking was confusing and stressful lovely hotel small but cute and cozy no shower in the JOY room and you have to be over 6 foot to see in the mirror in the bathroom blinds don't fit windows so to bright hard to sleep with a light outside the window on the side of the building so lost a star for that! Be careful as stairs are quirky and dangerous after a few drinks!
But to have breakfast in the bedroom was a nice touch fresh fruit, creamy yoghurt, coffee, bacon baguette, cereal, croissant, massive selection of mini jams, breakfast went on forever will return but with black out blinds

Perfect located for a trip to Canterbury. Really didn't want to promote this hotel as I want it all to myself . Our reception was warm and friendly. Everything was covered about Covid. The room was spotless very good bed (serenity) plenty of space for two people. A lounge and also an outdoor seating area is wonderful. The continental breakfast is superb although the two dining areas are covid friendly. The floors aren't perfectly level as this is a very old building. Just beware of your footing. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone X

Wonderful hotel and they got us out of a pickle after a mix up with another hotel booking. beautifully clean rooms, great service that went way and beyond and lovely fresh fruit breakfast and warm and fresh croissants were yummy. Great central location and loved watching the swallows flying from the roof terrace in the morning too.

Our stay at Cathedral Gate exceeded our expectations. We only stayed for one night but it was more than enough for us to rest and enjoy the beautiful view of the Cathedral out the window (despite the scaffolding). The staff were all very friendly and made us feel safe and comfortable, as all Covid measures were strictly followed and the premises were spotless and extremely sanitised.
The staff were able to accommodate our request for the room with the best view, and also offered it at a discounted price as we are Expedia members. We were warmly welcomed and were offered complimentary wine as well. Our breakfast was provided in our room as requested, and everything was delicious and carefully prepared.

We absolutely loved our stay, our room was very cute overlooking the Cathedral and we loved the welcome note giving the history of the property. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful, Rob gave some great recommendations as did Monica and we were made to feel completely at home! The location is fantastic, right in the centre of Canterbury. Breakfast was lovely. Would highly recommend!

For a place that is so reasonably priced, it blew expectations out of the water: (1) it is the best location possible, in the heart of town and literally right next to the cathedral; (2) the history and architecture of the hotel itself make it interesting and unique; (3) the breakfast is great (especially if you pay a little extra for the full English breakfast -- but even the included continental is good, with fresh warm croissants and great fruit salad, for example); (4) service was very friendly and accommodating -- they went above and beyond what I expected.
The only downside was no air conditioning (but there is a fan in the room, and that turned out to be enough when we were there). and many of the rooms have shared bathroom, but we paid a little extra for en suite and it was quite nice.

I have just returned from Canterbury where myself and a couple of friends stayed at the Cathedral gate hotel. I really can't find a fault - the location couldn't be anymore central, right next to the cathedral, room with a view on the main square, very clean. Hosts are extremely friendly and accommodating. Continental breakfast is included in price, for a British fry-up you have to have breakfast. But honestly, continental was more than enough for me! Bathrooms/showers are shared, but cleaned often.

The location is fantastic, as it's just next door to the cathedral (no, really, at first I thought it was in the entrance!). The rooms are warm enough, and the beds are fine. It's not luxury accommodation by any means - in some ways it's a bit weird, as we had to go up, then around, then up, then out, then in, then around to get to our room - but it's affordable, the breakfast is good, and the staff is pleasant.
