In autumn 2019, we fell in love with Carlton Lodge, one of Helmsley's most beautiful buildings and, the thought of moving to North Yorkshire. So, after calling Cumbria home for many years, we traded lakes and mountains for moorland beauty. We couldn't be prouder to have purchased from the previous owners a true Yorkshire favourite and intend to carry on welcoming guests to Carlton Lodge. We're not only your hosts, but we're your neighbours, as the beautiful building of Carlton Lodge is in fact two buildings.
We are extremely proud to have been supported by the North York Moors National Park's grant scheme and have been awarded Friendly accreditation in all four of their unique categories. This means we have joined a very special list of only a handful of accommodation that has all four accreditations. Our extra facilities include a drying room, secure bike storage, binoculars, camping chairs, tools, maps, books, flasks for hot drinks, head torches with eye protecting red lights, a Belfast sink for washing bikes, boots and paws plus a wealth of knowledge and passion for North Yorkshire.
With its ancient square (Friday's market day), castle ruins, meandering beck and stone cottages, Helmsley is worth more than just a day trip. The friendly town has an abundance of local shops, delis, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs all surrounded by spectacular countryside. Nine national walking trails, and plenty of charming day walks, are right on our door step plus lots of lovely eateries.
Beautifully sweeping panoramas, acres of ancient woodland, star clustered dark skies, stunning abbeys, unique wildlife and a wonderful feeling of remoteness. The North York Moors National Park includes all this and one of the most unique landscapes on the planet - heather moorland. In the heart of the national park you'll find one of the largest continuous expanses of moorland in the UK. Home to red grouse, curlew, merlin and golden plover, this protected area hides ancient stone crosses and an abundance of magical footpaths.

Went here out of Ohio to stay the night and it was super cute. They had a swimming pool that was very clean, and they gave us a room that had just a bed and a big jacuzzi. Even did a little special thing where they put flower petals on the bed and floor and decorated it with little tea light candles. It was very cute. Check out time was at 11:00 a.m. but they did have a breakfast available.

Found the Carlton Lodge for just a one night anniversary get away for me and my husband. We live about 2 hours away. Was better than we expected. Everyone was so nice, beds were comfortable, and because it was our anniversary they put tealight candles and wine with rose petals. The jacuzzi in our room was spotless and worked perfectly. We were beyond pleased and will definitely be making the trip to Adrian again.

On the outside, this motel looks like a really nice place. On the inside, there is a nice pool and breakfast served in a serving area with tables and chairs. It looks nice and the staff seem to be polite. The rooms and hallways are nicely carpeted and painted and wall papered. There are some problems, however: Bathtubs/showers lack handhold bars for easy entry and something to hold onto while showering to hold yourself steady. Showers and tubs need re-caulking.
I also noticed what looks like black mold where the caulking is missing. Caulking is also missing in other parts of the bathrooms. Beds are too high with mattress tops at 32 inches above the floor. That makes the bedside tables are too low, making it difficult for one to reach things on the tables from the beds without falling out of bed. The height of the beds also makes it difficult to get into and out of bed and simply sitting on the side of the bed.
While there, the hair dryer overheated and stopped working and could not be restarted until it cooled off after being used for only a few minutes. Upon inspection, the air intake on the back of the dryer was caked with a lot of dust that impeded air flow.

I've been staying at Carlton Lodge for the better part of the past seven months and have always had a great experience. The entire facility is well-kept and the staff are very friendly. Thanks to Terri, Ferris, Marvin, and Erin in particular for providing excellent service! I have and will continue to recommend the Carlton Lodge to anyone staying in the area.

This hotel's bad experience started right at check in. Was quoted $20 non-refundable deposit for traveling with 1 dog when I made the reservation over the phone and was then told it was $50 non-refundable when I checked in. What?!?! That is the MOST I have been charged anywhere; and I travel about two weekends a month with my well-trained, performance sport dog.
Almost went to another hotel, but it was raining, already getting dark and it was just too late to change and had just driven 8 hours. Then, as I was bringing my bags into the room, I wasn't sure I was told the correct room as the door was wide open and propped that way with the luggage rack. Which took me back to the front desk to check, and they assured me it was my room and no one else had a key. Yup, my room comfort level was off to a weird start. Then, discovered the remote to the TV's batteries closure was loose and turning off/on the took a minimum of 10 clicks to get any result.
I discovered at around 11 pm that the toilet was still "running". Took off the and saw that the chain was not attached. Had to head to the front desk where the night clerk had to come to my room and jerry-rig it into place and told me it was not a permanent fix because he didn't have any parts. Awesome. [I had to replace it a couple of more times before checking out.] My room key also failed and needed to be replaced several times. The clerk just said, "we've been having problems with those." Would NOT recommend staying here. Super frustrating say - room and price wise.
