Originally a magnificent private residence, the Borrowdale Gates Hotel maintains the lovely, homely atmosphere of a genuine country house. Set in its own 3 acres of wooded grounds at the head of Derwentwater facing south into the Jaws of Borrowdale, it's no surprise that Alfred Wainwright described it as the "loveliest square mile in Lakeland". Sit back in a winged armchair in front of open fires and immerse yourself in a good book with a bottle of Chardonnay in our lounges, with their full-length windows looking out across the farm animals in the field and the Borrowdale Valley.

Never miss a thing and be the first to know about our offers by signing up to our mailing list. The area offers a wide selection of hikes of all levels, direct from the hotel doorstep, so you can leave your car behind.
Picture dining where windows run through the length of the restaurant and their captivating fell views ideally complement our food, which continues to win fulsome praise from guests and critics alike, including the 2 AA Rosette for culinary excellence. Our unique combination of traditional British dishes and classic French cuisine, passionately created by our head chef, Christopher Standhaven, and his brigade using the best of local Lakeland produce, creates archetypal country house cooking, with a light, modern interpretation.
It is set in a beautiful valley a short drive from Keswick and a lovely quiet spot for relaxing. The rooms were well appointed and very clean with great views. The area offers a wide selection of hikes of all levels, direct from the hotel doorstep, so you can leave your car behind. For rock climbing enthusiasts, there is a good choice of climbing sites nearby. Just mention when booking if you would like to book a session with a local Mountain Instructor.

After all these years we've found our perfect holiday. Hotel feels like a second home with views to die for from everywhere. The car doesnt need to move as public transport is so good and so many places to walk straight from the door. Watch the birds squirrels and sheep whilst dining. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and food was simply gorgeous. Room was comfortable and a good size. Already booked 3 more trips and cannot wait to return

A lovely hotel with a comfortable room and great food and service. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome and as if we were staying in a warm and friendly home rather than a hotel. The location is also great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and has a number of walking options nearby.
