Wonderful atmospheric pub with plenty of space for inside and outside dining. Great choice of menu all reasonably priced with allergen options available. Friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. No parking onsite. A bit of a scary, old-fashioned playground if your children are young. Supervision needed

This pub/restaurant/b&b is absolutely gorgeous. The history is everywhere you look and very well looked after. We found the staff pleasant, informative and helpful inside. The drinks were nice and refreshing and the food was gorgeous, we both cleared our plates of the haddock and chips and the chicken and leek pie. We will definitely go again next time we are in Caernarfon.

Despite the 3-stars given, I think this would be a great place for dinner. However, we visited during lunch and had a limited menu, few of the options available which were listed on the board out the front. Furthermore, the online app is terrible, you're best off ordering from the bar. A strong selection of ales nevertheless.

Came for dinner as it was recommended by a work colleague, and I have to say, I was very impressed. The staff were very friendly, and were able to get to me quickly despite being busy. Started with the chicken liver pate, and I was not disappointed. Hands down one of the best I've had in a while. I then had the seafood chowder which was a new experience for me, and if in ever in the area again I'll definitely be back for more. I might even try to stay there so I have an excise to experience the food every night!

Went there twice for dinner when we were in Caernarfon, the staff were friendly, helpful and professional. The bar itself was cozy, welcoming with a vibrant buzzy atmosphere and had a good selection of beers and spirits. There was a good menu with a broad selection of starters, mains and deserts, the food itself was well cooked, arrived at the table piping hot, was well presented and tasted great, The one thing I would warn you all about is to wear clothing with an expanding waist as the portions are a bit north of generous. The meals are very well priced and offer great value for money. I would really recommend this hostelry for a casual drink or for a great meal in nice historic surroundings

This place is phenomenal! We've been looking for seafood chowder and this checked all the boxes. An abundance of seafood, whitefish, salmon, mussels, shrimp, etc.some corn and root vegetables in a delectable white wine and double cream sauce. Oh and the Welsh Beef Minced Pie my husband ordered was equally as delicious.

Lovely 500 year old inn serving a good range of ales, beers, wines and spirits. Great selection of food, both full meals and lighter bites. Really sorry that we didn't have time to eat at leisure but will definitely be back to enjoy an inn which gives the full experience of its 500 years in business. Brilliant.

Face masks required for staff & guests in public areas. Hand sanitiser available to guests. Socially distanced dining tables. Floors marked for social distancing. Very busy place for a Thursday evening; which shows its popularity. Good service, to order food go to the bar. Welsh & English spoken. Very close to the castle.

My sticky toffee pudding never arrived after waiting for an hour. After the first 20 minutes, I reminded the waiter about my order, who said it was on the way. Then another waiter brought the cutlery after about 30 minutes, then nothing. In the end, I just left because I had lost my appetite (and 4 pounds in the process).

An absolutely fantastic place to eat and drink. Could not fault the staff and service. What I would call a proper pub, big beams, proper fires and an 'old' feel to the place that thankfully hasn't been modernised like many others. There is another part that looks newer but is in keeping with the rest of the place. The beer was great and the food was top-notch, not a bad thing to say. You could tell the food was good by watching other diners. Recommended it to a couple who were looking outside.

Decent meal here and friendly staff, even if they clearly had forgotten our main meal and had to chase it after what seemed like an age. No real apology but it was a warm evening and we were outside so it was OK. Steak & ale pie was very tasty. Only major gripe was having to wait ages to be seated at the start.one member of staff coming back out to check the ever-increasing queue literally every 5 minutes, and just take one party, even though there were plenty of tables available inside and in the courtyard. People could have been greeted and seated much much quicker.

Hubby and I were doing a quick driving tour of Wales and decided to spend the night in the NW port town of Caernarfon, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. We are so glad we did! Arriving lat night, the night staff kindly allowed us to park adjacent to the inn, and not wanting to venture too far to eat dinner, we ate at the Inn's restaurant/pub. Luckily we only had to wait 10-15 mins for a small table next to the fireplace. Score!
The restaurant is cozy and meal portions quite decent. I highly rec. the fish 'n chips. The next day, we took a 1/2 hr walk around town -- it's a beautiful walled city -- and learned more about the name "Black Boy." Note: it's not intended t/b derogatory.the origin dates back to the 15th-16th c history of child chimney sweeps, coal mining or King Charles II's swarthy, dark complexion. The monarch, who was in power between 1660 and 1685, was renowned partly for his dark complexion

Honestly, I can't believe a place with this name still exists. It would not in the US. However, it is one of the most highly rated places in Caernarfon. My son had the fish and chips with mushy peas. It was huge! I had the recommended lamb. It was also substantial and flavorful but lacking the wow factor I was expecting. Others found their meals decent. It was quite pricey for the quality of the food. The service was slow. There was one poor waiter for the whole establishment and his stress was visible!

My wife and I went here with four friends while we were visiting this town. We didn't have reservations and were told we would have a considerable wait for a table. We decided to put our name in and wait in the pub area. We managed to find six seats in what was a very small, but cozy pub. One of our friends was actually sharing a table with two local patrons and they were very friendly.
We ended up staying in the pub for our dinner. Most of us ordered beers and just soup or something light. What we had was very tasty. This place lived up to the good reputation they have and we ended up having a fun experience.

Looking for somewhere to eat in Caenarfon and came across this pub on Yelp and so glad we did. As soon as you walk in, you feel the warm friendly buzz - families playing draughts, couples chatting, groups of friends hanging out - it's a proper pub! My kids hit the jukebox and loved hearing their choices playing. We stayed to eat and were impressed by the range of choice on the menu.
We mostly chose pies - fish, lamb and steak and ale and were not at all disappointed. My seafood crumble had an array of chunky fish pieces in and the most tasty cheesy topping. Good sized portions of chips, vegetables and chunky bread accompanied our meals. Loved the little nooks and crannies and we sat by the fireplace. It's a stunning 16th Century building, right next to the castle and definitely worth a visit.

Went to the black boy inn during a hen party weekend after it being the nearest place to our campsite. Lovely old worlde type of pub which serves food- although quite pricey for pub meals. However presentation and choice is excellent for a pub so I can definitely agree it's value for money. I went for a prawn cocktail starter which came with crusty bread (toasted and was a little burnt) and the Welsh pie.
This was chicken ham and leek, and came with sweet potato fries and veggies. I wasn't too blown away. From the reviews I had seen I was expecting to enjoy it more. Sweet potato fries were greasy and crispy, and the chicken chunks in the pie were chewy and cut in solid cubes. It wasn't not nice, but I thought it would be a little more impressive Busy, quite crowded, but a lovely Welsh ambiance

Very cute pub with an eye catching exterior - you will not miss it when you are walking around Caernarfon Castle area! Usually I am not a big fan of pub food, but I am surprised that they have quite a huge selection of dishes. I just wanted a light lunch so I went with the Trio of Prawns with cocktail sauce (in the starter section). The prawns were fresh and cocktail sauce was perfect.
The staff working there were very friendly and helpful too. As it's the last day of my holiday, I could not return to try the main courses. Wish I had discovered this place earlier. Would definitely recommend

Very cute pub with a charming - if slightly chaotic interior - and a nice patio in the front to people watch. If you're in the mood for a pub you'd be hard-pressed to find a better one in the town. The ales on tap are tasty and service is friendly. The food is frozen-and-fried. The claims of "locally caught" fish may be true but it's also locally cooked to death. Go to this place expecting a nice pub and lively atmosphere with something to fill your stomach that you won't think much about and you'll be fine.

Having recently had to move back home for the summer, I do miss absolutely everything about the wonderful city of Manchester, especially it's lack of seagulls. However one of the best things about being home is being able to catch up with old friends. So we meet up for lunch/dinner at least once a week, and this time we headed over to the Black Boy, I've been here more times than I can account for however I'll base this on the last couple of times!
At weekends it can get quite busy here, especially Saturday nights as a lot of locals frequent the pub as well as visitors. When you first walk in it can seem a little dark inside due to the decor, but your eyes soon adjust and it becomes quite cosy. They also have a restaurant section if you fancy a little more formality though. The menu in general is a little expensive for a casual meal however they also have a light bights section which is ideal for lunch, as you do get quite a bit. The club sandwich is delicious, as is the classic fish finger ciabatta. All in all it's a decent place for a bight to eat and a bit of history!

I visited the pub portion of this restaurant at lunch. The menu was fairly extensive with options for starters, light meals or full pub meals. I got Dwynwen's Pie, which was chicken and leak pie served with sweet potato chips and peas. It was very tasty. The ambience of the pub is nice with exposed beams and antique fixtures. It was a very enjoyable experience.

GREAT FOOD, FRIENDLY STAFF, CUTE PLACE, EAT HERE! If you want to feel like you are stepping back in time and communing with the locals, this is your place. Super charming sea village pub! When we walked in despite it being very business (our hint that it was probably good) The staff greeted us and went out of their way to clear a table for us and to take our drinks at the bar.
It felt very down home and cozy. Though I don't get the story about the "Black Boy" the decor of this inn is colloquial and cute. Now to the good part. The FOOD. GREAT FOOD! The menu is rather gourmet for what you might expect. Specials were sophisticated and tasty such as Rabbit, bacon, mushroom casserole, and baked stuffed aubergine. I settled for lamb shank casserole that was the highlight of my night!
You can tell there is a passionate chef working in the back and he or she is winning! I hope you stop in and enjoy the place. It does get crowded on weekend evenings though, beware!

This review is for the pub in Black Boy Inn. You pass by the Black Boy Inn, and it's pretty clear it's geared toward the tourist. I usually don't like to go to touristy places, but this place kept calling out to me. Finally I went there specifically for dessert after dinner elsewhere. The atmosphere is cozy and the interior sweet, yet rough around the edges traditional pub.
It was a fun place to stop for dessert. I ordered the Sweet Profiteroles, which was nothing less than perfection. Exactly as you'd expect it, yet even better. And coupled with Traditional Tea and cream, I couldn't ask for a better experience. Definitely come here for dessert. I wish I could speak for an entire meal, or even a beer, but maybe in the future.
