Accomodation was very good as we had a double aspect room (No.9) although on the top floor, with no lift, it was worth it for the views of the river Bed very comfortable with lovely white fresh linen. Bathroom down a small corridor. Tea/coffee & bottled water every day. Full English Breakfast was huge and you could alter to what you wanted off a very comprehensive menu.
If you preferred Continental Breakfast there was a good assortment available and the best toasting machine I have experienced. Evening Meals - not a large menu to choose from with two Vegan dishes available. Once again food excellent. All the Staff were always very polite and courteous and nothing was too much for them. Would I go to The Royal Lodge again - most definitely.

My marks are mostly for the location. The downstairs part of the hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely. Our room was for two nights. On the surface it was clean. The window blinds were broken and didn't close. The curtains were dirty so we're the windows. Bathroom small but functional. The bed was very hard. We had a dog room as our little dog went with us.
Not disabled friendly all rooms are upstairs no lift. The location was stunning, if you are going for a day take food with you. Only two hotels to buy food from. No shop, although if you go up That rock there's a fantastic cafe at the top.

Mafioso treatment by Manager We booked a table at the Royal Lodge restaurant because we'd had a delightful vegan lunch there a few months before. We were shown a place near the emergency exit although another more appropriately located table was free. We had to wait 45 minutes while the waiters brought in trays for the outdoor diners placing them on our table while we held the door open to help them exit.
After a 45 minute wait our plates arrived, missing the veg. and cold. We politely pointed out that the veg as listed on the menu was not there. Out came the Boss. ''I recognize you two'' he said. ''You were complaining last time!'' (We had actually complimented them on the previous occasion, and we had never seen him before.) My friend tried to explain he was mistaken but he shouted into her face, '' I am talking''.
He picked up our plates and said, ''Now, get out!''. As we were leaving he pointed to me and said I had to pay for my glass of half finished wine. I did. Then he said, ''Get out of my car park!. And don't go to the Saracen's Head either!'' At this point I said F.Off! He said, If you were a man.'' At that we were frogmarched out by two men who followed us out of the restaurant and down the road trying to point out that my language was unacceptable.
We refused to engage with them. We felt humiliated, disempowered and abused by a bully for no reason at all. By the way we are two mature women who have travelled the world and never experienced anything remotely like this behaviour.

I'm a grandmother of 9, volunteered with some of the world's most vulnerable people and have always found kindness and respect. Not so in this beautiful part of our country Because my meal came without the vegetables as per menu I politely asked if I could have them or an alternative. I was appalled when the manager stormed over grabbed our plates and kicked us out, banning us from both hotels and the car parks!
He said we had complained before but all I could think of was before Christmas I booked the Saracen's Head for lunch and was ensured there were plenty vegan options. I'm severely allergic to eggs and dairy. They refused to make something for me so we went on to the Royal Lodge where we had a lovely meal and complimented them. So the manager wouldn't let me speak, shouted over me in a crowded restaurant and sent a security guard to escort us out of the car park.
I felt bullied, humiliated and disempowered. It seems from other reviews this is how he behaves. I've given one star only because if the lovely meal we had before Christmas. Fortunately we were the only ones in the restaurant and he wasn't there!,

Lovely guest house at the end of a rural lane right in the banks of the River Wye. Although our room was a little dated on the decor front, it had a view over the river and a large en suite with a bath and shower over. All the staff were extremely polite and welcoming. Breakfast is a choice of continental or cooked with the menu provided to make your choices the night before.
The evening meals in the restaurant were fabulous. The Royal Lodge is ideally situated for walks along the river and beyond. It's well worth the walk up to Symonds Yat Rock to see the wonderful views. All in all a great stay in a beautiful part of the country. We would definitely recommend a visit.

The venue was stunning and staff friendly. However the evening meals were very poor. I understand the menu was limited because of staffing issues but the quality of the food should still have met the rating advertised by he lodge. In addition, given the location, I was suprised to be charged 7.00 a night to park the car. This is a big additional cost which wasn't prominently advertised prior to the booking.

We stopped for lunch after a long walk along the river. The welcome was slightly odd as we were made to feel uncomfortable. The head bar lady was rude to her staff and we felt she was unprofessional in front of customers. We ordered sandwiches for lunch. Although there was only one other family in resturante it took 40 mins for the sandwiches. These were just under 10 each and can only be described as average.
One member of our party suffered severe abdominal pains after eating lunch here which was disturbing. The views were nice, the hotel was dated, the who experience was disappointing. We will not revisit.

From the moment we arrived the impression of the location, hotel and staff, especially pat and Michelle, was top class. I mentioned only an hour before our meal that it was a special occasion and pat and Michelle made the extra effort to make our meal that much more special. The room we stayed in was an upgrade and very spacious, spotless and I would highly recommend. The food was well priced and very very tasty. A very dog friendly hotel that was a must for us and we will be returning in the near future.
