Nice pub, nice but expensive beer. (Avoid it this year (2022) and went to the Black Bull at the bottom of the hill which has reasonably priced ales.) 2021- First time I've paid 4.50 for real ale! Sad really, as I normally have a couple of pints when I visit any pub. I guess these are difficult times, but one thing leads to another and instead of selling four modern 95% pints for say 4 a pint, I chosen to cut back and just have two. Do the Maths, or Math if you want to be grammaticalyl retentive.

We stopped off for our tea before our drive back home after a lovely day with our friends and puppies. Staff are lovely and kind, the service and food was great. The food is just what you need after a day out on the lake, very tasty and filling. Amazing views and dog friendly! The decor inside was fresh and cosey. Perfect little hotel. I'm so glad we found it. What more can you want. We can't wait to stay over on our next visit. I highly recommend to all our family and friends. Thank you so much it's beautiful! X

Good bar of real ales mainly local micros but all at outrageous prices. We have had a weeks holiday in coniston for the past ten years but this was our last. Standards down prices sky high. The same beer brewed less than five hundred yards away is sixty pence a pint dearer than it is in Broughton about seven miles away and seventy pence dearer than my local and we are asked to surport our local micro breweries.just a rip off. the beer in question is Bluebird Coniston bitter ABV 3.6 BREWED AT THE Black Bull in coniston.

This is simply one of the best pubs in the world! A fantastic cavern like tap room with a fabulous and often changing range of real ales, it's a warm and snuggly place to spend an evening after a long day hill walking. Then there's the amazing food, local sausages, roast duck, pates, soups mmmmmm! Besides Coniston being the best village in the Lakes The Sun is the best pub (though The Black Bull does give it a run for it's money on occaision), definitely worth a visit if you're in the idea. I've never been there in the summer but I have it on good authority that the beer garden is a pleasant way to spend a sunny afternoon too.

I first visited the Sun Hotel on during a particularly ill advised camping trip on a very wet night in March. As we were only in Coniston for one night, we decided to do an eating tour: basically each course in a different pub, sampling the real ales and wines along the way. The Sun, situated at the foot of Coniston 'Old Man' was chosen by a regular visitor to the area from our group, to provide our main course. Unfortunately, as with all our expeditions, eating or otherwise, this didn't go quite to plan - the real ales in our starter pub distracted the boys for a little too long and by the time we ventured out on the short walk up the hill, the sun had set and stopped serving food.
We did stay for a drink with the very friendly Landlord, well, it would be rude not to, and had a great chat with him in the cosy bar area typical of historical inns in the area with its stone walls, exposed beams and roaring log fire. There is a great choice of beers and wines here, but my friend's evening was well and truly made when he perused the impressive whisky selection. Oh, and they sell bags of yummy vegetable crisps, which kept us going for a couple of rounds before we went off in search of a more substantial main course.
I was disappointed not to see this place in the daytime, as it has impressive views down to Lake Coniston, and is truly picturesque. I am sure though that I will make the effort to pop in for lunch some time in the near future.
