I honestly feel a bit guilty about the review I'm about to leave because there was so much that was great about the hotel, but I have to be honest. I wish I could give more than three stars, but sadly I can't justify it. First of all well done to the lady who was running the entire hotel alone in the evening, including the bar and reception. Unfortunately when I got to my room, I noticed it smelt of stale smoke (I'm not blaming the hotel at all, I know some guests might be naughty and smoke in rooms).
I mentioned it to the receptionist who spoke to the manager and it was agreed for me to move rooms and was upgraded to a bigger room as it was the only other one left in the hotel. Fantastic customer service! Rooms are comfy, lovely bathrooms and all the facilities you would expect to find. Nice, quiet and convenient location too. Although rooms look clean, I would say that they could do with an overall freshen up as I did notice a similar stale smell in the room that I moved to.
It wasn't horrendous, but I do have a sensitive sense of smell and did pick up on it. I had to open the window for a bit to let the room air so it ended up getting rather chilly. Towels had a bit of a strange smell to them too - looked clean but didn't smell fresh. A bit off putting having just washed. I would say that the hotel would be great value for money, and I'd return if in Exeter again, if it hadn't been for the smell which was catching in my throat. I eventually got used to it and slept fine, but I do feel that improvements could be made to the overall freshness of the rooms so that guests are more comfortable.

Great central location - just a short walk to the centre. Parking can be a little tricky in this area but St David's Hill is good for free overnight parking if you arrive after 4pm. The hotel itself is lovely, clean and my room was big and well presented. Breakfast was great with a good choice. It was also very reasonably priced compared to other options nearby, but equally good if not better

Very good, made our stay in Exeter enjoyable & comfortable. Room was quiet; we were in easy walk of town, the cathedral & the museum; parking was close by. The service was great - reception was very helpful, in particular Alfie was exceptional, very helpful & ensured we had a lovely breakfast for our room each day. A big thumbs up
