The Lochside is an Islay institution: a privately owned hotel with a bustling restaurant and a lounge that has been recognised as one of the great whisky bars of the world. With 12 newly refurbished ensuite bedrooms available all year, the lochside really is the heart of bowmore. Our Menus are based on everything local, and we pride ourselves on using produce straight from the sea or land to your plate.
Local crab, langoustines, scallops, mussels and oysters all feature regularly on the Lochside's summer menus, alongside halibut from the neighbouring island of Gigha, prime steaks, racks and shanks of lamb, as well as old favourites like fish and chips and Steak and Islay Ale pie.

Services
The vast majority of visitors to Islay come by ferry and Caledonian MacBrayne's new state-of-the-art vessel, the MV Finlaggan, has made the journey faster and more comfortable. Book online at www.calmac.co.uk or by calling +44 (0)8000 66 5000. Booking is essential during holiday periods. The ferries leave from Kennacraig on the Mull of Kintyre and arrive at either Port Askaig, in the north of Islay, or Port Ellen in the south. The hotel is located just over ten miles from either port. Kennacraig is 105 miles or 2 hours drive from Glasgow and about 500 miles from London.

Overnight stay to experience the hotel because daughter booked it for her wedding in 2024. The wedding planner had already shown the bride and groom around on a previous visit but did the full tour again for us and spent ages answering our questions. Busy place. Everything was just excellent. The rooms, beds, food, service, decor, grounds are all first class. The spa is amazing. I don't think I've been anywhere else that I've been so impressed with. Love it!

Just home from a romantic night away here. Everything was perfect from start to finish. The hotel was immaculate, lovely room and friendly staff. The surroundings were lovely, nice walks too. We stayed in the garden suite, patio area was nice spacious too. The bar staff were lovely. We had a lovely dinner looking over the lake then cocktails in bar which were amazing. Lovely cooked breakfast in the morning. Highly recommended this place. Will definitely be back.

We were here for a wedding. I can honestly say this is the most stunning location I have ever been to. The function suite has panoramic views of the grounds, the staff and service were excellent. The food served was delicious and hot which is an accomplishment when serving so many people. A definite 5 stars.

Had a fantastic weekend at the Lochside House Hotel. We arrived on Friday for a wedding on the Saturday. We had dinner in the restaurant on the Friday which was superb, and a wonderful weekend at the Wedding. The whole hotel was very impressive. Our room was one of the Garden Rooms on the bottom floor which had wonderful views, and was nice and spacious. Will definitely visit again soon.

Overnight Spa Break From the minute we arrived until we left we were welcomed and served by superbly trained polite friendly efficient staff. The location of hotel is great. Rooms and facilities all to a very high standard. The Spa Break was wonderful. Spa staff were great, treatments fantastic and all in a lovely calm relaxing environment. Dinner was excellent.
Service efficient but friendly, nothing was too much trouble, choice and quality of food on the set menu excellent. Breakfast the next morning didn't disappoint and was the same high standard and quality. Could have happily stayed for longer and simply could not find any negatives to our stay.

Can't really fault this hotel/Spa, it is a classy place. I would certainly recommend it. We had a dinner, bed and breakfast deal and it was a lovely experience. Room was spotless and the food was delicious. We also used the spa which again was really very good. The staff are very pleasant and we were well looked after. 10 out of 10

We had a great time, on a dbb deal. The hotel was lovely and the food was amazing, the spa area was great and relaxing, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The only fault we had is our rooms were on the first floor and there is no lifts, my sister has a weak leg but she did manage. Would definitely go back.

Loved the setting, the staff were good, and the bar prices very reasonable. The room had a sliding door that opened I to a small patio area, would be nice in the summer. All in all a good stay, wife is heading back to try the spa facilities with a few friends. Would recommend if you are in the area and looking for a high quality hotel

Super location in well tended grounds. Reception was impressive, quick but not hurried, friendly and professional. Hotel public areas exceptionally clean, as was outside the hotel. No litter or leaves or debris. Our room was immaculate, well furnished and the bed was very comfortable with snow white linens. Staff were professional and friendly, at the bar, at dinner and breakfast. Service was speedy. Would recommend and stay again.

I hate that I have to rate them so low, but the experience in the hotel warranted it. We, 8 cyclists and van support team arrived checked in for 2 nights no problem. On Day 2, 5 of the 8 people were told they had to move into another room which was a downgraded room. 2 of the people who had to move were put in another room that was occupied by one of the other person that was in our group.
We wasn't given any great explanation of why we had to give up our accommodations for others. The sad thing was even though we called weeks before arriving to confirm our reservation. We were told that we were all set. We were not very happy with having to move to another room especially with no satisfactory explanation. Love Scotland though.

I was lucky enough to enjoy two dinners here and both were out of this world. First the setting is lovely overlooking the small Bowmore area harbor. The staff very friendly and attentive and the food incredible. The first night I started with a delightful Pear, Stilton and Walnut salad that could have been a meal in itself. The special of the evening was mussels in a whiskey cream sauce so I had to have that.
I was huge, fresh and absolutely fantastic. Came back the second night and didn't learn my lesson on ordering and started with a smoked salmon on a potato scone. I swear it was literally two fist size wrapped salmon on a lovely potato pancake. I followed this with the days special of fresh baked scallops. Normally I would expect 2-4 scallops but the place came buried in at least 9 absolutely lovely scallops cooked to perfection. If you make it to Islay you MUST try here.

We were so pleased with our first meal here we were glad to come in a second evening. This is a town where you do need to book. We enjoyed the superb Islay oysters and several other dishes including Duck, Scallops in Shell and a lovely light pear salad. Most memorable were the Mussels in whisky. This is not an exaggerated name, there was a lake of whisky in the creamy broth and these were wonderful mussels. Desserts were mixed but we enjoyed the Eton Mess and they have a good sticky toffee pudding.

I came here as part of my whiskey tour (see Scottish Routes for more on that). The short version: Good food, good service, good drink selection especially if you like whiskey. The long version: This was an amazing party place. The Swedish men on the tour with me ended up closing down the restaurant/pub two nights in a row. They have live music and seem to have a very lenient policy regarding patrons who want to go up and sing.
The whiskey selection they have isn't just amazing; they seem to have many special edition, small cask, hard to find whiskies on hand and available to you. And the view. Wow. Beautiful. It's not really meant for a very quiet dinner for two but if you're okay with a little noise, you and your honey would have an amazing meal and a very memorable time.
