The manor of Down Hall was in existence during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-1066) and we know from Anglo Saxon records that during his reign, it belonged to Ulwin, Thegn of Edmund AEtheling. We also know from these records that Down Hall was one of ten medieval manors in the Parish of Hatfield Broad Oak that were already considered ancient at the time.
All rooms are equipped with complimentary tea & coffee making facilities, iron and ironing board and a laptop sized safe. All bedrooms and public areas benefit from complimentary WiFi. More spacious than our Feature Rooms our Deluxe Rooms are exquisitely decorated and have breath. More spacious than our Prestige rooms our Feature Rooms are exquisitely decorated and have.
Our Classic Double Rooms are compact and comfortable. They have a simple elegance and feature wall panelling behind the beds. The colour scheme is quiet and calming emphasised by the use of luxurious materials that lends itself to the historic architecture of the main house. All our Classic Rooms are situated in the historic Main House building and have stair access only.

Beautiful location and Manor house. Service and staff absolutely amazing and friendly. However there are a few things that need improvement such as the reinforcement bar holding up the chain around the pond and I've had a lot better food but I wouldn't say the food was bad. To put it another way, the food wasn't good value for money. But then I guess if you're there for the location then it's reasonable. I probably wouldn't eat there again at 70 quid per head. Overall a nice experience. And many thanks to the wonderful staff.

First time going and to say the least the grounds themselves were spectacular! But besides this we went for afternoon tea which was wonderful. I had the veggie one which was lovely. They had really nice sandwich fillings which made a change to other places I had been. Overall I'd definitely go back again! Perfect food and perfect atmosphere, what else could you ask for?!

The estate itself is stunning and the staff very generally helpful. However for 300 per night I expected nicer and cleaner room, the bathtub was dirty when we got there and the bathroom could use a bit of renovation. Also, you can hear everything from the other rooms, hence, our neighbours kept us up till 4 am! Moreover, I had an unexpected surgery that didn't allow me to enjoy the spa I booked, when I informed the them about it, they didn't care and they charged me for the spa access anyway.
Last but not the least, I have been charged initially 390 at my arrival although the room was 295 and when I left, they charged me again for my actual bill, 374. After 4 days still no signs of the money back on my account due to double transaction.

The Spa is amazing. The massage staff were fantastic and the staff throughout the hotel were lovely and eager to make our time there enjoyable. The outside area is lovely, with soft furnishings available, areas both in the sun and the shade available. Whilst we were there there was a wedding on and the Bride and her party looked very happy. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was very good.
The coffee was lovely and management made an effort to make a fuss of my mother in law (it was her birthday). Afternoon tea looked marvellous but unfortunately you would have to book in advance but I wish we had! The bathrooms were clean and well appointed- though initially difficult to locate! Dog friendly and whilst attempts have been put in to make the hotel accessible with some ramps, there are quite a lot of steps on hardfloors to be aware of.

Absolutely blown away by Down Hall. I stayed here for 2 nights and have thoroughly adored every second. The first night I ordered room service then the second I ate from the restaurant menu and enjoyed a fabulous steak with Bearnaise outside. I spent one of the days with a client, we sat outside and had an amazing lunch and Champagne. The staff are absolutely incredible, so attentive and really want to support you in having a wonderful stay.
The gardens themselves are gorgeous and you're even given a map with various woodland walks around the grounds, a real treat before the drive home. I didn't try the spa this time but will certainly be back (with husband and dog!) and would love to try it then! An amazing place! Highly highly recommend!

Was expecting a first class room and service- very disappointed. Booked a Eat, Love, Stay deal which cost 450 for effectively an overnight stay of 20- hours; to include a 'feature' room, evening dinner and breakfast. We were hoping for a luxury room, it was tired and basic- It did overlook a fountain and lawn but nothing special. It had a tiny bathroom and basic shower.
We decided to go to the bar before dinner and had my husband had to wait a long time at the unattended bar whilst various staff came and went without offering any service. I understood when I booked that dinner was included- however we were then advised that we are only allocated 40.00 each towards dinner, the remainder we had to pay ourselves- which doesn't go far when just the filter steak is 49.00.
I ordered a glass of wine, my husband complained about the time it was taking to arrive. Who we presume was the manager eventually arrived with my wine ( didn't catch his name, a bald headed man) and delivered it with a very sarky comment of ' sorry you had to wait 5-minutes for the wine!' - shocking. The food was good, but nothing special. Breakfast was better.
The cost of the breakfast was 16.00 each, so allowing 40 for breakfast and 80 for dinner this means that the room was 320.00; it certainly was not worth even half that amount. If the service we had received had not been so appalling bad we may not have felt so aggrieved- but to be frank we feel totally and utterly ripped off financially and very disappointed in the quality of the room, service and experience. Stayed here on my birthday, and we wish we booked for longer. The hotel is very beautiful and classic. The spa treatments were lovely, and Cheryl is fantastic and so bubbly. Breakfast was included in the booking and it was fresh, loads of options to choose from. Dinner was good but wish they had sides for picky eaters like me, but I pushed my comfort zone and got the Duck which was 10/10, tired the oyster which were beautiful presented just not for my pallet.
The vibe is relaxed and slow paced, definitely great for Londoners to destress from the city. We had a Classic room and it was comfy, cozy and all round just right for one night stay. Will return again!

My friend and I had a wonderful and very relaxing stay there. The facilities are beautiful and spotless; the staff are super friendly and attentive; and the food was most yummy. Great cocktails too! Totally loved the dog-friendly rooms (I was provided with a bowl and a comfy bed). There are "dog bins" in the park. There are nice walks to do, a giant chess set, badminton and tennis courts, and a decent gym.
There are also outdoors games for children. My sole regret: not booking a 2nd treatment in the spa! Would definitely go back. Total recommend. Pictures: roast halibut; breakfast tray; and fish pie.

My partner and I had lunch here. We also used Down Hall's spa facility. Tasty lunch, lovely architecture and ample grounds for a post lunch walk. The service was fantastic from start to finish. Every staff member was friendly. The lady at the spa's reception ensured our treatments and spa access ran smoothly - what an awesome human being! We can't wait to return.

Been here twice now for our office party, beautiful old Manor house, well maintained, rooms are a bit pricey, but if you don't have your partner as a taxi, I would have stayed. I am always fashionably late, so on arrival at reception I was given directions to our function room, which when I approached the door was empty, I was going around like a little lost sheep, asked another member of staff, they told me our function was upstairs, turn left and the name of function room, took the stairs he pointed out, got to the top, no function room there either, came back down, did another loop the loop, ended back near reception, bumped into another lovely staff member, I explained my conundrum, he then took me to the door of correct room I tell you I was pretty thirsty at this point, so managed to guzzle a lovely glass of red.
Room was set up beautifully, nice dance floor area complete with DJ. Food came out on time, lovely 3 course meal, don't know what happened to the coffee all in all I would highly recommend, also great for you golf addicts. Can't comment on the spa as didn't use it. Just make sure at the point of reception to ask for a map, this place is huge. Only selected 4 stars due to the giddiness of finding the correct room

When our group arrived some of the rooms weren't ready as the hotel was very busy with a wedding and a number of other functions. However the staff and managers made sure we were looked after with free drinks etc. Our rooms were spotlessly clean and the food was excellent. All the staff were lovely and very helpful and professional. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the grounds incredible. Our group will definitely book again.

This is a very nice hotel. As we came in, we were greeted by a gentleman at the reception ( Sheldon i hope i dont spell it wrong). Staff were very friendly and helpful. It is very clean hotel, tea room was absolutely majestic and breakfast buffet was nice too. I would definitely come back to this place. Love it. Thank you staff.

Very happy with the tea afternoon. The staff were friendly and catered to any requests, even bought out a surprise birthday treat for my father, (of their own doing) for the occasion for why we were there. The gluten and dairy free options were equal and comparable to the normal offerings. Lovely place and enjoyable time spent there. Would highly recommend.
