Found pub recommended for good food online. When we arrived a bit disappointed by shabby bar area where we ate lunch ( more attractive dining room kept for evening) BUT food absolutely top notch.best we have had for ages.cheese souffle starter was divine and pork fillet main course succulent. Obviously excellent produce and a super chef

Sunday lunch on 15 May. Arrived to a pretty stone built property, good parking. We wanted a drink from the bar but were immediately ushered to our table, pretty view over the garden. Old world charm, all the waiters were gentlemen, some of a certain age. Two courses, a fair price and expertly served, 3 x roast beef one pork with delicious crackling.
Proper Yorkshires but disappointing roasties and red cabbage cooked with tarragon. Ugh not a good match for us! The chef/patron Paul was on show but only for his favoured guests, how is your meal, but for us, not a glance. Traditional fare, great location, is it too cosy and would a critical eye make it the destination restaurant instead of just a good one. We wish you well!

We had a lovely meal here whilst on holiday in the area. The food is a little on the expensive side, but the service is excellent and you are not at all rushed making it a very pleasurable dining experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, food, venue, atmosphere and service and would definitely eat there again if we were in the area. In fact were considering stopping there for a weekend break later in the year. In summary, worth a visit.

Lovely old pub/hotel/restaurant. Great atmosphere, open fires. Staff very helpful and place is extremely dog friendly. Stayed overnight in converted stable room. Very clean and comfortable. Food is exceptional although not cheap but you come away thinking well that was expensive but well worth it. We will be back. Highly recommended.

Lovely staff and the room we stayed in was really nice. If you want proper pub grub or your more normal type food, at reasonable prices then this isn't the place for you. If you don't mind then you'll love it, food is always well presented and served nicely. Otherwise, the location is a great base for exploring what is, in my opinion, the most beautiful part of the world.

Fab place! Great location for local walks. Room was lovely, clean, bright had lovely beams & with everything you needed. (We stayed in the garden room) and very reasonably priced for the standard. The restaurant was like stepping back in time almost, candle lit room, log burning fire, staff in traditional black and white with waistcoats and bow ties.
Staff lovely - the main guy was eccentric, possibly with a foreign twang I've seen review saying he was rude he really was not!' Very reserved but happy to do anything for you. He can also make a smashing espresso martini which wasn't on the menu. Food - small menu but absolutely fantastic, we had 3 course and we're wowed with them all. The menu isn't a traditional pub menu it's refined and it's expensive. but you do get what you pay for. Breakfast - again super traditional, silver service, great selection. Very happy with our stay we will return!

So overall a nice stay, clean room with a comfy bed in a quiet location. But: Room was freezing on our arrival, I wore my big coat in the room shivering for quite some time. Eventually warmed up and became toasty. TV signal is poor, we were told on check out this is because the TV mast has burnt down! There are solutions to this. But it ruined our plans to watch a trashy film in bed with a glass of wine.
Dinner was eye wateringly expensive. 25-36 for a main and while it was nice it was not exceptional. Positives: Tea and coffee in room Nice toiletries included with room. Breakfast was nice and included with the room.

The service was excellent. I ordered a half cloudy cider and it was so nice I ordered a pint the next round. Our party of four had a variety of main courses Duck, Beef, Pork and I had the Lamb. All were delicious and beautifully presented. The desserts were white chocolate and raspberry Bread and butter pudding. Green apple souffle, Creme Brulee and I had Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. We all finished off with coffee which was hot and strong. Above average prices but ideal for a special occasion. The scenery on the drive there was stunning

The blue lion is extremely friendly, it carries authenticity naturally and we had a lovely stay there. We would recommend an overnight stay and eating dinner there, booking is necessary - the choice was very varied and the service exemplary, we will be back and thank you for making our stay really lovely Anita and Ivan

The most brilliant lunch. Blue Lion provided details of a short walk before eating and then we sat outside in the September sunshine for an excellent meal. The twice baked Wensleydale souffle was a sublime treat and the queen scallops baked in gruyere mouth watering. The pork belly and duck dishes were equally succulent and delicious. Some days live in the memory for a long time. This will be one of them.

Meal for 2. We booked hoping for the restaurant which is closed. We found the bar seating very uncomfortable, upright hard church pews not conducive to our comfort at all, poor seat padding. The meals were very good, fillet steak was a special option & was fabulous. A very varied choice of wines but expensive. We paid 125 for 3 courses & 2 rounds of wine/pint of bitter, which is what we pay at our local Michelin 1 starred restaurant. One member of staff seems overly officious, it is a pub after all, all other staff friendly & efficient.
