The beautiful market town of Grantham is a fantastic starting point when discovering Lincolnshire. The small town began as a Saxon village and grew into a market town during the 11th century. It was recognised in the Domesday Book in 1086 with a recorded population of 183 households and in the Middle Ages, the town was successful in the wool and leather trade.

Food here very poor and service not much better. 15 for "fish" and chips. I say fish, it is a joke. I have never seen a fish this small in my life. It was like a fish finger with a few chips. It took over 45 minutes for a few small meals. Forgot the chips with one meal and got other parts of the order wrong. Also forgot to even start one meal which caused a longer delay.

Upon making a complaint they seemd to act like this should be normal, honestly it isn't. It's incredible how this can be served in a restaurant. Genuinely shocking. They didn't really seem to be bothered. Offered no resolution at all, I felt like the staff looked down on you a little like they were better. Do not order food here.

I would not recommend staying at this hotel I've stayed in it for 2 nights and there was no issues until I've left the hotel and got a call from hotel owner claiming they've taken money out of my card regarding a throw over gone missing which I've got the blame for. I've experienced the room was very hot and it was like a blow of warm air coming through the fire alarm so I've intended to cover it to stop the air I've tried explaining this but I wasn't getting listened to. Ashes have apparently just appeared on the window sill. Ive told them take pictures which they claimed they have I've been accused of smoking when I have never smoked in my life I've issues with my body would never intend on smoking. It's ridiculous I'm so upset

You HAVE to go for Sunday lunch.staff are 1st class. We had a fantastic freshly cooked sunday lunch. 5 * taste too it. Chef has done the boss proud with what they are cooking in the kitchen. Very clean restaurant can't fault it. Price was really competitive especially for the high quality food. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. Excellent

Fantastic hotel in the middle of Grantham with the most wonderful blend of medieval history and pleasant, comfortable and spotless rooms. Breakfast is perfect, served in the amazing dining hall (see photos) where you can sit in a window alcove and watch the bustling high street below. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We left with such a positive feeling. Certainly deserves every one of the five review stars and worth every penny we spent!

Treated like royalty as were other guests it appeared. Service was exemplary. Contacted in good time by hotel as I had not clarified bed choice. Reception was very friendly and welcoming. Room beautifully presented, refurbished recently and spacious with quality comfortable furniture. Bed genuinely king size (7'). Slept like a log. And to top it all a dinner to stay long in the memory.

Quality of cooking superb, Chateaubriand with dauphin potatoes AND triple Chips all to die for and the sauces made you feel in heaven. I know I'm going on but it really was that good with lovely attentive service throughout by our waiter. Value for money throughout excellent.

Called in here for coffee/lunch after dog walking. Delighted to find our cocker spaniel was made welcome with dog biscuits and bowl of water. Coffee and food were excellent. We were in the main reception area which was lovely and comfortable, staff were very friendly and helpful. Good old fashioned service was evident, not something always available in establishments. Would highly recommend and look forward to my next visit.

Wasn't happy with the room. Supposed to be superior. I hate to think what standard room is like. No comfy chairs. Very noisy from outside air vents. Excellent Sunday lunch in 13th century restaurant. All staff very good. Will take more care choosing a room next time.

Good prices, lovely staff. Full of character. Every time I've stayed I've been visited by one of the many spirits residing there. Absolutely fascinating place as the oldest hotel in the world.

I went to eat at the Bistro, food was just ok, Service was very bad, took for ages for the food to come, not good service at all, never came to take the plates away! Even after the server asked if we wanted anything else!

We went to the Bistro Restaurant 'Bertie's' for a meal and had a lovely meal, I would have given this review 5 stars only my partners steak wasn't up to much, he asked for medium rare and when it came out it was rare and I do know the difference between them it was really bloody and chewy but for the price it wasn't worth complaining but he won't be having steak there again, on the other hand my food was absolutely delicious, I had the chicken for main course and sticky toffee pudding afterwards and they were both amazing and the service was great too so we will return but NOT for the steak sorry Bertie!

I haven't had the luxury of staying in Grantham's most historic hotel - but I did recently visit it's beautiful old bar for a drink. The surroundings are absolutely stunning - low beams, gorgeous furnishings. I would like to say a roaring fire, because it was single digits outside and almost as cold in the bar - but sadly, no, the fireplace was empty!

The Royal & Angel was originally built around 1203 and has recently been restored to its former glory. If you want to sip a drink in salubrious, beautiful surroundings, you've come to the right place. However, it appears that history has a hefty price tag - two small bottles of Corona set us back six quid! Perhaps the reason why we were the only people in the bar apart from two other suckers. And also the reason why much as we enjoyed the beauty of our surroundings, we probably won't return.
