What a restaurant! You step back over 100 years into a bygone era. Except, that is, for the food. There was a group of us so we saw a cross-section of the menu. In short, it was all good. So why only 4*? The veggies. They were all beautifully prepared, the chips were gorgeous. But. they could have been presented better. The potatoes were plain boiled, melted in the mouth deliciously but would have looked better tossed in a little butter with some herbs.
The same for the carrots which had a bit of butter but we had to toss them ourselves. The Baileys cheesecake is perfection: change nothing. The cheese platter was good for me 'cos it gave me, a 2 day visitor, Orkney cheese and Orkney oatcakes; more oatcakes please and what was that white granular, totally tasteless cheese? The lobster dish is brilliant; the duck, the steaks were all delicious, just a shame about the look of the veggies. Now offer us real coffee and the evening would have been exceptional.

Wild dissatisfaction swept the table as our pre-ordered meals were delivered with long pauses between each plate's arrival. Coarse and unfriendly staff interspersed by others that were happy and smiling often failed to deliver coherent service with any kind of discernable organisation. The food offered good choice for vegetarians and vegans, although the finished articles were generally bland and under-seasoned.
The meat and fish based dishes were more appetising but relied heavily on the flavour of second rate produce. Generally food was overcooked, although not burned. Desert again offered a reasonable mix of both classic and interesting dishes, but lacked flavour or was overcooked. In summary, not somewhere I would return given the option of other establishments, but if it was this vs. hunger I'd probably concede and return. Oh and the bill was also incorrect. A fairly simple thing to generate a series of numbers that add up using entry level mathematics.

Located in the historic Stromness Hotel, this place occupied the second floor of the hotel with views of the harbor. The vibe was one of former luxury that had grown more casual over time. The furniture showed some wear and tear, but the place was scrupulously clean. Our server was a young woman who did a great job without being omnipresent. I had the steak (a filet) medium rare.
The beef comes from the butcher next door, as did the accompanying vegetables (steamed carrots and cauliflower). The steak was super tender and flavorful, although they prepared it medium well, or it would have been even more enjoyable. I also had local scallops as a starter, which were delicious. My wife had a vegetarian, butternut squash lasagna which she found only adequate.
My fillet was twenty-six pounds (cost not weight) which seemed too expensive to not be perfect. It could have been if more care had been taken to not over cook. There was no room for pudding. Might give them another try as the choice of restaurants in Stromness is limited, and their local food suppliers seem promising.

Five of us traveling across Scotland arguing about restaurants versus pubs versus distilleries. I vote for Neolithic structures. Every time we find something great we argue first vs second place. There are five in top place and Scapa Flow in the Stromness Hotel is one of the top. The scallops were fantastic. Even the steak and ale pie was the best he had eaten. We are about to tuck in to the toffee pudding so this review is over.

Rather quaint, old fashioned style restaurant suits the middle aged to grey money diner rather than trendy youngsters. Good food, fairly standard menu that I liked with good portion sizes at reasonable prices. Excellent draft and bottled Orkney beers. Good service from pleasant waiters and great to look out over the harbour to island of Hoy even from our table at the back of the restaurant. Can't give it five stars as the chips were not brilliant and whole place needs a little refurbishment, however would go back again.
