My company had booked me in to The Kirkwall hotel for 4 nights and from my confirmation email I was expecting to be in their Annex. I was pleasantly surprised to instead be put in a very comfortable 3rd floor room with excellent tea and coffee making facilities and a newly fitted bathroom. On my 2nd night I received a call from reception to advise me I was only booked for 3 nights which shocked me.
I went to reception and they told me they were fully booked on Saturday night and that the booking company that had made the booking were open 24 hours so I should call them. After dinner, where the young lady who served me was kind enough to check with the chef if I could have a lighter option from the lunch menu and a salad was ordered, I phoned the booking agent and she read back the email chain and the error had actually been with the hotel.
I did not make the booking yet I was the one who had to sort out their mistake! The next evening when asked how my day was I remarked better now that I have somewhere to stay tomorrow and the response was " every cloud". The flamboyant young man, who had been the one who phoned my room the night before, told me I couldn't have anything lighter off the lunch menu without checking with the kitchen.
I found the other serving staff very polite but I was made to feel unwelcome and I was glad to checkout and go to another hotel especially after the street noise outside my room on the Friday night from a local pub. As a key worker flown in by my Company to work in Orkney I felt disgusted with the way I was treated. I mentioned this to the girl on checking out.
I will ask not to stay here again. It would be a good idea to mention to residents at check who who have a meal allowance that they need to book a table for dinner as the restaurant gets very busy.

Although recently renovated, the room had a foul stench of sewage, the bathroom was very hot and smelly (not to mention very small), the sheets were dirty and there were many bugs in the room from a window that was left open before our arrival. Despite booking a twin room and having a confirmation email showing a twin room, we were given a double and told the system didn't show a room preference. Breakfast was not the best. The local restaurants had better breakfasts.

What a fantastic team. A warm welcome from the lady on reception. We weren't staying, just wanted to have a drink and we had our dogs with us. (It's difficult to find a dog friendly pub in Kirkwall). She was so friendly, told us absolutely dogs were welcome, but we couldn't eat in the restaurant with them. As soon as we sat down, a bowl of water for the dogs appeared. A fantastic team, beautiful surroundings and I wouldn't hesitate to come back next time on mainland Orkney.

The Kirkwall hotel is a fantastic location both for the town centre and touring the Island. Staff were very friendly and helpful and made our stay very relaxing. The room and en suite were newly decorated and very well done. There was also a lovely sitting room with sea views. Tea making facilities inc filter coffee. We had dinner on the first night and once again we would give the meal top marks.beautiful. There is nothing negative I could say about the hotel or our stay. I will definitely be back and would thoroughly recommend The Kirkwall Hotel.

Just back home after a 4 night stay at this lovely hotel. The Manager Leanne was amazing as were all the staff we meet during our stay. Nothing was to much trouble for them. From the service at check-in from the reception staff to the friendly bar staff in hotel bar and the waitresses and waiters in the restaurant who also doubles up as tourist guides advising of where is nice to visit. Will definitely return. Thank you Leanne and all the staff x

The room had been recently renovated and was clean and comfortable despite the outward appearance of the building. However, the design of the bathroom was poor with nowhere to put anything either inside or outside the shower room. Pleasant dining room with good service but food disappointing. Parking right outside.

The location is great, right on the harbour, with the historic old town and many shops within a short walk. The hotel itself was a work in progress, being refurbishing room by room. Ours had been refurbished but was somewhat under provided for in terms of furnishings. We could have done with a wardrobe for instance, rather than a couple of hooks on the wall. Nice enough but not good value due to lack of supply and high demand.

The room was absolutely gorgeous and twice the size of rooms in my own home, amazing service and the food is outstanding, the double shower and freestanding bathtub absolutely made this. The price of the most expensive rooms are even cheaper than Glasgow and Edinburgh regular prices so I'm very impressed with the standards.

Loved it! Stayed for 3 nights. Staff were accommodating and extremely helpful. Room was absolutely lovely! Comfy bed and linens. Decor from local tweed maker. Everything was tastefully modern and spacious. Generous breakfast options. Honestly could not have asked for more in a hotel stay. Would stay again.

Overpriced for what you get which is the wrong food and little to no noticeable table service. Head waiter didn't bother with shoes or socks. Ordered our meal the wrong thing cooked incorrectly times two. Not once were we asked if we would like to order drinks. Table was only half cleared after the meal. The staff were incredibly proud of the "complimentary" (their words) bottle of tap water and five pieces of bread on a table of six. The one bottle was the limit of their generosity when it comes to tap water. Tldr; wrong food, limited and lacking service and staff.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights during a coach tour of the Orkney Island. Our room was on the third floor and was a good size with adequate facilities. Perhaps a a bit too much furniture in the room or maybe it could have been better arranged. The twin beds were somewhat short albeit comfortable. Tea / coffee makings supplied were very good (excellent shortbread).
The en-suite could be better laid out and updated. The elevator / lift was antiquated but worked. The full Scottish breakfast was included and was very good, however a request for kippers or haddock as an alternative would attract a 5.00 supplement. Absolutely mad! A large fry-up would cost a lot more. What is it with Hotels in Britain. Are they frightened to cook fish?
After all, we are surrounded by the stuff. The evening meals were excellent. Sometimes coach parties suffer with poor offerings, however the Kirkwall Hotel served well cooked, good sized portions and hot meals. Well done. I thought that the bar prices were fair and we enjoyed the ambience of the Hotel. The only issue we had was that my Wife fell off the bottom steps of the stairs, because she didn't see a clearly defined finish to the landing.
It is a dark tartan carpet. Two other members of our coach party also stumbled during this stay. The Manager acknowledged that this wasn't the first time that someone had fallen and I hope that they are putting measures in place? The Manager offered to take my Wife to the A&E Hospital, but she declined. She attended when she arrived home and apart from the badly sprained right ankle, she also sustained a fractured left fibula. Although the weather was poor, Kirkwall and this Hotel is a good location and I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

Fantastic ambience, lovely staff and a diverse menu with some distinctly Scottish flavours running through it. Portions were a little too large, none of us could finish our main courses, and a few minor flaws in execution brought the overall score down. This is not to say that anything was especially wrong, infact it was because, in general, it was so good that the small slips were so noticable. I would eat here again but I would probably try somewhere else first.

I haven't stayed in the Kirkwall Hotel, but have eaten there many times. The restaurant is nicely decorated although there's always things up that look like Christmas decorations! The food has been consistently good every time I've been there. There's a fairly extensive menu with a lot of local produce - certain staple dishes remain on the menu (such as Westray Haddock and Pasta Kirkwall) while others change from time to time.
They are extremely helpful and quite knowledgeable about catering for special diets (which is not something I could say about many other eating establishments in Orkney). The food is also reasonably priced. Booking is advisable, particularly at busy times of year such as August and Christmas. The biggest drawback is that the service can often be slow - particularly at lunchtimes when people are often in a hurry to get back to work.
