Services
The Red Lion Hotel is situated in the tiny hamlet of Bredwardine, which nestles on the banks of the River Wye just twelve miles from Hereford, and eight miles from Hay-on-Wye. Built of red brick, its origins lie in the seventeenth century when it was used as a coaching inn. The lounge bears the name The Courtroom, as this is where the circuit judge of the day used to sit in judgment.
We have a 2 bedroom self catering apartment available on request, please contact us for availability and prices. All bookings must be confirmed in writing within 14 days. Telephone bookings less than 14 days in advance can be confirmed by giving your credit card number to cover the required deposit.
The Red Lion Hotel is a traditional country inn set in the heart of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside. Our bar and restaurant reflect this, and we make every effort to maintain the old world charm, whilst providing a modern approach to excellent customer service. Whether you want a good pint of real ale, or to sample our delicious menu of pub classics and chef own dishes, you can do so in the relaxed comfort of the bar or lounge areas, slightly more formal restaurant, or secluded beer garden.
In all we have some 8 miles of the river known as The Moccas Fishery located at Bredwardine between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford. Over the last few years we have steadily built up a reputation as one of the premier Barbel Fisheries in the country. The usual weight range is between 4 to 9 lbs, with many double figure fish.

A lovely hotel with friendly staff, great food, and a cosy atmosphere. We were staying for two nights while we fished and couldn't have felt more welcomed by Mike and staff. The fishing was excellent with numerous chub and barbel caught, although it's best to stay mobile and find the fish! Thanks Red Lion!

The fishing club i am in has used this venue every Feb for the last 7 years. And the reason for this is that it is the perfect fisherman's pub. Good beer, nice food, stunning location, quirky rooms and some great fishing. The pub have the fishing rights on the Wye that runs near by. It is a really hard place to beat as a fisherman's pub, i've not been anywhere better and i tired a lot of places in the UK. Mike is a great host and will not only supply the beer but point you in the right direction to catch that monster fish. I'm sorry that we won't be there in 2019 but don't worry i sure that we will back!

Another visit to The Red Lion with the Kids and Scot. There is no better place to spend angling time than at the Red Lion, wonderful surroundings to fish the River Wye. After a hard days angling what better place to come back to for a pint and an evening meal. Our hosts Michael and Poppy make it home from home, good comfortable rooms. To start the day a full english breakfast, will keep you going until evening, although packed lunches are available.
Once more many thanks to Michael and Poppy for a great stay.ps thanks to Paul for keeping us topped up with Butty Back when Michael is busy with guest. Michael Wood Stisted Essex

We were camping up the road in the Bycross campsite, but decided against cooking and ended up here at the Red Lion. While waiting for our food, we overheard a regular tell the lady behind the bar that the wall mounted ashtray outside had blue tits nesting in it! They lady then went off and made up a laminated sign asking smokers not to use the ashtray and why.
How sweet. We both went for the chicken and brie pie. An odd combination it turned out, but it had chips, which is what we both really wanted. That said, we did eat the pie and it warmed the cockles of our hearts. The main bar was almost empty apart from a local and the lady behind the bar. We had a brief chat as we left. I enthusiastically explained that we had been canoeing down the river. Met with a quiet enough reaction, we then left.
My partner explained as it was a big fishing pub, mentioning you are a canoeist is not advised as a friend of his had done this in the past and was told that canoeists were not welcome. Truth be told were made very welcome. I would definitely return to The Red Lion Hotel if am back in the area.
