Called in for afternoon tea, lovely gardens and impressive renovation so far. Afternoon tea was nice, couldn't eat it all so asked to box up treats. Only to our surprise when home that items were missing.staff not very attentive, no one asked if everything was alright, or if we required anything, we had to ask for coffee top up. Moving to bar area for a glass of wine, we had to ask for wine menu and order our drinks at the bar, so imagine our disappointment being charged 9 service charge, not quite up to the standard we expected.

We are in the area for a wedding, and had time to kill so looked to book a half day at the spa. The first receptionist I spoke to didn't really know what was available, but mentioned she thought there was a half day package for 90 each for a morning including a 30 minute treatment, when I was then transferred to the spa, I was told; 1) we don't do half days on a weekend 2) but actually we could come to think of it because we have availability 3) but we'll need to charge you more, and seemed to just pull 20 out of thin air On principle I just said no thanks, you've got availability and it just feels you're levying a charge because you want to. The disorganisation of the staff and general treatment, whilst polite, was bizarre.

We booked for afternoon tea - one of the most expensive in the area, and I had hoped for a special treat for my husband's birthday. The building is very special, but a lot of things about the afternoon tea service weren't quite right. Listing all the details here would be a silly litany of tiny grumbles, but for the special treat of an afternoon tea it is attention to detail that makes it really something.
I'll just mention being sat in the corner of an otherwise virtually empty dining room, away from the view, on a wobbly table. The choice of background music which must've been a Now That's What I call 2000's CD. The portions not being large enough to merit a tiered stand so it is served on a couple of plates instead, and the teapot with teabag that wouldn't have been out of place in a greasy spoon.
A shame. When places like Jesmond Dene House and Langley Castle do afternoon tea really well, we won't be returning here. When the staff paused from complaining to each other about the only other diners (who were in today doing menu tasting for their wedding) just long enough to ask us if everything was OK, my husband replied "it was fine" - and it was, but definitely not the hoped-for special treat.

Visited on a wet winter evening for a birthday celebration meal. Enormously impressive buildings, especially if you drive round to the great hall entrance, very friendly helpful staff, and a simple but interesting menu, including vegetarian dishes. The wine list isn't too exhaustive, but has a good selection, but you may need to save up before you visit. Apparently the hotel and facilities are impressive, but we'll save that for another visit.

Matfen Hall is stunning, but unfortunately the staff are useless. If i were the owner I would want to know. We had to ask several times for the table we were sitting at to be cleared. I love Matfen so We continue to go and every time the service is horrific. I feel they are just untrained young and have no idea, we all find it comical now. The last time we popped in for bottle of champagne it took forever and after asking for the bill several times we eventually were given the bill from the last people who had clearly just left after giving up asking. The food is good from the restaurant.

Before anything else, this place is stunning, particularly at this time of year. It provides a great venue and backdrop for a wedding which is why we were there. The wedding was fantastic, the main hall was beautifully decorated for Christmas and a great day was had by all. Now to the reason for only 3 stars, firstly the food. For this type of place, and indeed at this price point, you would want it to be exceptional and it just isn't.
The food is good, but definitely not great. The rooms, at 240 a night minimum (just checked for 1 night in January and this is now 299.00 per night minimum) are again, nice, but nothing special, they are not worth the cost that's for sure. We have stayed in many a hotel, some cheap, some in the middle and some very high end and I would say this is lower end of the middle in terms of quality.
Now to the biggest bug bear of all, the drinks here are not just expensive like you would expect at this type of venue, they are truly extortionate. 7.50 for a pint of lager is absolutely ridiculous! The amount of money generated in this place for weddings, functions and holiday makers, there is no need to be charging this amount for drinks. In summary, this is a lovely venue but its elegant facade is just that, a facade, once you get into the bones of it, it's a very normal hotel that charges way too much for just about everything, quite disappointing.

A stunning Manor House in rural Northumberland. We stayed for their dinner, bed and breakfast package, ideal for our anniversary. Staff were attentive, rooms are clean (if a little aged) and the building itself is truly beautiful. I lack the patience for golf, but the course looks good and well maintained. Spa was nice, fairly quiet and clean. Dinner in the Emerald restaurant was a highlight, with exquisite plates of seasonal food prepared with finesse. Breakfast was lovely, with local kippers from Seahouses, though I'd definitely take their advice and come down earlier rather than later.
