Greywalls Hotel, with its wrap-around formal walled garden of about six acres, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901. We are open all year round. Greywalls was built as a holiday home for its original owner, the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton. Lyttleton, a keen golfer, insisted that the house be built 'within a mashie niblick shot of the eighteenth green at Muirfield'.
With its warm honey coloured stone from the local Rattlebags Quarry, pantiles from Denmark and its crescent shaped symmetry it was always one of the Edwin Lutyen's favourites.

My mother and I stayed 2 nights at this hotel. Even has non golfers we enjoyed our time! It is a great distance from shops, cafes, and restaurants, and of course the beach! Our service was amazing for our entire stay! We had an afternoon tea here which was amazing and we also dinned for a dinner which was also delicious! Their breakfast which we were sadly only able to have once was just as good as all their other food had been. The rooms were great, very spacious and kept very well. Overall a great hotel experience even for non golfers.

Dreadfully poor stay. Stayed in the supieor cottage. Linen was so old there were holes and the staff had obviously put the good side on the bed and torn side underneath. Room was cold. Tired looking. No tea making facilities to be found. Breakfast we were told to help ourselves to the continental table. and found nothing really continental about it.
Few bowls of cereals, large bowl of yogurt to spoon from, a bowl of cut of fruit and some fresh juices. There are 2/3 star hotels which provide more. Even a banana. And separate yogurt pots. But here nothing. It was dismal. Breakfast menu. Even worse. Nothing on there for vegetarians or Vegans. My smoked salmon was tasteless. No toast. Just sliced up bread. Ridiculously overpriced for not a lot. Service was slow too. Probably the worst 4 star hotel stay I've been since 2012. Best part was the walk around the garden.

Our experience at the Greywalls was only for lunch, which I would rate 4.5 stars. We never would have known or found this place, except we had a driver who suggested we might like to stop for a lunch somewhere "not a pub". And we ended up at a "country house" called the Greywalls! First off, the building, architecture, ambiance, etc. is all fantastic and certainly not something you find every day.
You pull into the driveway to a stunning view of the curved front of the building, walk into what feels like an old-world classic country house, and then are seated in what feels like a living room or family room. Our group were seated on couches and comfy chairs in a room that felt a bit like a study, with a great view overlooking the golf course.
Lunch was great, we had soup and mini-burgers with chips. The presentation of the food was very nice, and the three mini-burgers added up to the equivalent of a decent sized burger. And the burgers themselves were the absolute best I've ever had in the UK. (I'm American and generally find the burgers in UK are not so great.) The chips were also about the best I've had.obviously hand-cut and nice and thick! The service was great, and the prices were reasonable compared to everywhere else we ate during this vacation.

This place is located far away from all the turmoil of every day's life, but still close enough to get into Edinburgh under half an hour. A hidden gem stone! Get first class servings, walk along the sandy beaches, view parts of the Firth of Forth, experience some of the surrounding golf clubs. That's what I did. As soon as you drive into the private pathway you feel like being sent back in time.
The staff welcomes you with elegant courtesy and you are accompanied to your room, feeling at home straight away (some less or more I assume :-) ). The rooms are adequately decorated and very clean. We had a cheaper priced room, but be wary that the cheapest room during off peak season is about 240 for 2 people sharing. Lol. If you can call this cheap.
For single occupancy I think you pay from 210 upwards. it's outrageous that single people are always charged more. As we have the money. When dining you are being served with gallant mannerism ensuring that your needs are being met satisfactory. The food is very tasty and delicious, but take into account that if you eat in the a la cart restaurant you might be hit by a higher than 50 bill charge per person.
So be prepared! The menu changes, such expect to get something different another time around. If you want to spoil your other half - then do! There is no doubt that because of its prestigious and expensive existence this place might only be affordable for special occasions or if you are not hit by recession. But if you are able to go there, enjoy the tranquillity that it has to offer. I know I will be back soon for Afternoon Tea, which is around 18.50 and therefore "just" affordable.
