The Duke Of York Enjoy all that our traditional good hospitatilty can offer. A place to relax and enjoy the drinks and food of your choice whilst taking in the superb harbour views. We have an extensive range of real ales, ciders, lagers and bottled drinks. Our wine policy is to use a limited range of carefully selected wines to be able to offer them by the glass or bottle at very reasonable prices. All over the pub you will see many historic pictures and memorabilia of Whitbys past from harpoons to bronze propellors.
Services
The history of the Duke of York can be traced back 1000 years to the doomsday book. It is recorded that the monks serviced the monastry above from this very spot, landing all they needed from the sea. The pier immediatly in front (Tate hill pier) is dated around 600-700 AD and Saxon in construction.
Due to the current situation we will be running a limited menu. We want you to enjoy your visit and keep as safe as possible. All orders will be taken at the table. Please be patient as we have limited kitchen team and all our food is cooked fresh to order.

Best pint I'd had all weekend (maybe a bit bias as I love a pint of Black Sheep). The view was great, atmosphere was good and staff were friendly and helpful.

Had great fish n chips here, service, food etc was good, the location is great and the views out over the Harbour are awesome. As far as pubs go this one's a winner so pop in for a pie and pint if you're in the area.

We just love the duke of York in the old town It's location and outlook are lovely at the end of the Main Street in the old town at the bottom of the steps up to the old abbey. Food and ale are excellent so we always use the public house when in Whitby. Staff very friendly remember it can be very busy at meal times so be early if wanting food and a seating

Tasty food although maybe a little overcooked. We called in at 7.30pm and they were still serving (until 8pm) We will visit again when we're next in Whitby and take our pooch as it is dog friendly on the wooden floor area. Great views over the Harbour and pier if you manage to bag a seat by the windows. Drinks prices were higher than other pubs in Whitby ie 11.40 for a beer and a wine.

Doesn't honour bookings. We booked this place during the pandemic. Gave all our details over the phone and said we would be coming for drinks. All of our details were taken with no problem and we were booked in. Arrived there to be met at the door by the landlady arguing that we couldn't have booked for drinks only as we wouldn't have been able to do that.

She was only interested in getting people in who would pay for food and wasn't interested in a couple just having a few drinks. The likelihood is that we would have probably ordered food anyway. We were turned away at the door and had to find somewhere else; during the pandemic this wasn't easy. We did though and will never return to this dump again. Plenty of other places to enjoy in Whitby. Avoid this one.

Popped into the Duke of York as we fancied a meal in a dog-friendly pub in Whitby. Very efficient and courteous staff who made us feel very welcome. The fish and chips are wonderful. Generous portions, superbly cooked and presented. The best batter ever. The atmosphere in the bar area (dogs allowed) was jovial, especially conversing with other dog owners and fussing their animals! Oh, the beer's great too!

Nice cosy pub. Food was reasonably priced and we enjoyed our meal. Might have to wait for a table. Dogs allowed on the wooden floor only, about half the pub
