One minute from alighting the train, 15 minutes from Inverness airport, and nestling in the vibrant and modern Highland capital of Scotland, is a true delight, a friendly, welcoming, real Scottish hotel of magnetic character and charm. And Inverness hotels just don't come more central than this!
Services
The Royal Highland is quite remarkable in that, although it belongs to, the once elite group of classic Scottish 'station hotels' it is the only one which has not succumbed to the power of the large hotel groups. This marriage of modern standards of comfort with traditional classic surroundings creates an elegant yet contemporary feeling.
A large play park for children of all ages with a boating pond, complete with ducks, a minature train ride, shop and toilets, along with lots of adventure play park features for children. A real mixed bag. Check in was good with friendly staff. Room a little dated but clean and comfortable. Service in the bar was good. Breakfast was a dire experience. At 19 per person it's not at the cheap end of the scale. Nothing explained when we entered just asked what eggs we wanted. Assumed it was a buffet. Two cooked breakfasts received with all of the usual stuff.
Problem was my wife is vegetarian. This was all accompanied to the sound of the beach boys. Also scaffolding tower in the corner of the dining room. A bizarre experience. We didn't bother bringing the breakfast to attention to staff as time was limited and needed to get going. Parked outside and blocked in so couldn't leave. Although signs in place to advise illegally parked cars will be removed hotel are powerless to do this. 45 minutes later I managed to get out. A poor end to an average stay.

Very poor. We went for afternoon tea. The scones were dry & tasted stale. The filling in the sandwiches were awful. The cakes no better. The place is tired & run down & in need of a good clean especially the ladies toilets. What do the tourist think! There were a lot in that day. As a local I find it embarrassing to be serving food & drink in such a dirty hotel . No excuse for this at all

I have Largely mixed feelings about this hotel. The staff were super friendly and we're very efficient. The hotel lobby areas are absolutely beautiful, the decor is beautiful and the staircase is something out of a grand movie! The walk to them room was a little hectic, understanding it's an old building I would understand that it's not made to fit.
But it was like a maze! And as someone who struggles to walk long distances due to disability the extra stairs that came out of nowhere didn't help (no lift to get to my room) Then we come to the rooms. I booked a "large" room and I was shocked when I walked In. The bed basically filled up the whole room, it was quite amusing as the bathroom actually had more floor space than the bedroom itself.
The mattress with thin and uncomfortable. The walls in the room/other rooms are paper thin. I could hear everything the next room was saying and they were up very late. Then when morning time came after a night of uncomfortable sleep, I was awoken at around 9am (if not earlier) by the sound of housekeeping battering through the hallway with no regard to others.
The check in/out times are a bit crazy. 10am check out and a 3pm check in to me seems a little bit cheeky. That being said, the rooms were spotless and equipped well (Iron, blankets, tea and coffee station) and the staff were ace Would I stay here again? Probably not I would Only for 1 night if I were to again, any longer and I would definitely struggle.

We arrived Saturday night on the 11.15 train so had booked a room here. We were grateful that we climbed off the train after a 12 hour journey straight into the hotel. Couple of negatives. The room was ice cold, it would have been nice to have it a little pre heated. Our room was opposite the taxi rank so was very noisy through the early hours when the youngsters waited for cabs.
Room 107. Positives. The price is redicilous. 75 a night! That's amazing for a central station hotel. We were able to purchase a late stay for a meagre 15 taking us through to midday which was appreciated. Breakfast was served in a charming large room. It's obvious that money has been spent on this hotel and it's good to see. I do hope it continues to thrive as it offers tired travellers a haven.
