Last time I reviewed St Agnes Hotel Bar and Restaurant 2 years ago I gave it 4 stars. From my experience last week, I' downgrading to two stars. Yes, they are dealing with covid, yes, it was Sunday evening so maybe it was a limited menu. However, from the limited choice I ordered a chicken burger with some sort of topping in a sourdough burger bun.
I wasn't expecting the burger to be accompanied by literally half a plate of chips heaped high. There was no salad garnish and no option for a salad. The burger was a chicken fillet and was very tasty, if a bit sloppy with the topping. However, the mountain of chips was awful to behold, and as I only ever eat a few chips at any time, the rest were left and wasted.
I mentioned this to one of the staff who listened attentively but I had the feeling I was being humoured. I asked him to pass my comment on the the chef, and later asked him what the chef had said, but fairly clearly either he hadn't said anything or the chef didn't care. Husband's fish and chips looked good, and he enjoyed his meal - having been given a lot less chips than me!
Staff generally were very friendly and attentive, and it's a shame that they have to deal with customers like me who say what they think! My meal would have been so much nicer (and so would my review) with a salad and way fewer chips. I felt I paid a lot - far too much - for a chicken burger and a huge plateful of chips.

On approach this is an impressive building and it doesn't disappoint on the inside or in the beer garden. They offer a really broad selection of drinks and some wonderful food. Although I did have a little problem with the Crab they were really quick to resolve the problem which made this a wicked visit! The staff were all very knowledgeable about what was on offer and were so happy which was lovely.
