The splendid Victorian Gothic architecture of the main house at Highbullen lends a tangible air of grandeur and generous hospitality to your stay. The restaurants provide the social and gastronomic heart of the hotel and we have been accused of allowing too much emphasis to be placed on good food and fine wines, but then...

Lovely location. The restaurant was tastefully decorated. We visited for Afternoon Tea. We ordered one Gluten Free afternoon tea in advance & four normal. The food was plentiful, the staff efficient, helpful & friendly. However the afternoon tea was not necessarily good value for money. The table layout could have been better. It looked very sparse on arrival.
Obviously once the afternoon tea stands arrived it looked better but other establishment we'd been to, on arrival, had looked more inviting. The lemon flavouring used in a couple of items tasted quite artificial. The fruit scones could have done with more fruit & the Gluten Free scones were very flat, just taller than biscuits in height. I've made GF scones myself & know how hard it can be to achieve a good rise but these were a little lack lustre. The plain Scone had a bit of an after taste, ironically like baking powder. However the fruit Scone did have plenty of fruit. Otherwise the rest of the food was quite tasty.

We were looking forward to our break which was due to start tomorrow. This was originally booked for April 2020, but understandably moved twice because of Covid. Today I received a phone call cancelling our trip. Whilst talking to the receptionist she implied that an event was being held at the hotel over the weekend which required our room; this was obviously more important than our stay.
The receptionist did apologise, however this is hardly good enough for a delayed 30th Anniversary. Having visited the hotel about 5 years ago and very much enjoyed our stay, we will not be returning and not recommending it to friends and family which we have done in the past.

Shocking! It's a shame I can't give less than 1 star. I find it highly unprofessional and not a customer focused service if you cancel customers bookings the day before. The only reason given being that there is an event which is happening - so we have to cancel your booking. This stay was booked so far in advance that you should have known about this other event before today.
We have recommended this 'establishment' to a few friends to strongly consider for a wedding as we have been to a couple here. We will ask them to look elsewhere and to suggest to others they do the same too. Especially if you do this to guests that COULD be attending an event here. I hope others read this review just to let them know not to get their hopes up on staying here - as it may get cancelled the day before because other people are more important than you and your money.

Stayed for a week in November with FitFarm and had an amazing time. Returned again this week for a spa afternoon and massage with my mum. We had a lovely time - great faculties and all the staff are so friendly. Great customer service from leisure staff in particular - the little details really elevate the overall experience. Very impressed we'll be back again. Thank you

Our family treated us to a stay at The Highbullen Hotel and what a delight this was. We boarded in the Chinoiserie room which was spacious and tasteful with a four poster bed. So glad we chose to dine at the hotel restaurant as the food was exceptional. One of the finest dinners I have eaten. The service throughout our stay was impeccable. Friendly and helpful. Special mention to Natalia. You don't have to be a golf enthusiast to enjoy a memorable stay at this hotel.

Nice pleasant staff on arrival, buildings were spotless clean we had the Dartmoor room also very clean bit dated I think it was one of the older rooms toilet was hard to use bad layout but it is an old building. First night we dined in the Cellars very nice food was excellent staff again very friendly menu is very limited but drinks were very competitive.
Second night we dined at the local pub Exeter Innn also very good highly recommended. Only criticism really was the breakfast did not live up too the full English was very disappointing sausage one of very smalll bacon was not great and not a lot of it shame as we had stopped in Exeter day before and got a better breakfast for 4.50 but we would come again but would probably eat out for breakfast

A big thanks to Jaynie and the Highbullen team for hosting our amazing wedding last Saturday. We'd been planning our wedding for over 18 months and for it to turn out the way it did exceeded all our expectations! We ended up with a spectacular outdoor wedding which our 100 guests adored - great food, lovely venue run by great people. Thanks for making our day amazing- would 100% recommend the venue. Thank you - Jeff and Kay

Facilities great, both pools were lovely and reception staff very welcoming. We stayed in the Loft Suite which was faultless. Such a beautiful room, highly recommend. Food in the Cellars was very average however, and customer service when dining was not what you expect for such a beautiful place. Some waiting staff, specifically Kay, was rude and dismissive both during the dinner and breakfast service, so it wasn't as if it was an isolated incident and not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. Apart from that it was a very enjoyable stay and will be returning (hopefully with better dining customer service).

Staff very friendly and courteous. We stayed In the loft suite which was clean tidy, stunning and comfortable. We had great weather so used the outdoor pool which was clean, bar not very large with limited spirits and no cocktails. We had dinner and breakfast in the devon view restaurant. Food very nice. We would come back
