The Dowans Hotel We are the Murray family, owners of a small boutique group called Shawfern Group Limited, and we became the proud owners of the Hotel in 2012. We arrived and saw this grand Victorian mansion set in ornate terraced gardens and commanding views of the beautiful Spey Valley below and.well, it was love at first sight! We immediately set about renovating and upgrading the Hotel, with the help of Chelsea McLaine of Glasgow, with the ambition of giving to the Dowans all the comforts of the twenty-first century without losing any of the building's original Victorian charm.

Services
Here, at the Dowans, our staff are key to making us who we are. Without their effort, dedication and service professionalism, we would not have achieved the levels of success that we have experienced since we took over the Dowans; for those very reasons, we are indebted to their hard work and commitment.
Our hotel, built in 1888, offers sixteen individual and bespoke en-suite rooms ranging from cosy and elegant singles to eloquently styled king and super-king size doubles. Every room has tea and coffee making facilities, a flat-screen television, free Wi-Fi and en-suite bathroom stocked with complimentary toiletries.
The menu here is seasonal, reflecting that all our fresh ingredients are sourced locally and sustainably. The '57' of the title records that the Dowans sits 57 degrees parallel north of the earth's equator: a fact known only to cartographers, explorers, and our son and brother Sean, who is a pilot, and it's Sean who gave the restaurant its name!
Beginning in the early 19th century as a little snack to break up the time between the two main meals of the day: breakfast and dinner at 8pm, Afternoon Tea has gained in popularity. Nowadays, it is enjoyed by many as a 'wee treat' and often enjoyed as a way of celebrating a special occasion. Here at the Dowans our in-house baker, serves up a delicious array of treats - both savoury and sweet - all freshly prepared every day and only using the finest of ingredients and local produce.Served between 1 and 4pm every day, we ask that all reservations are made with us 24 hours in advance.

A great evening, really friendly staff with great knowledge about their products. Food was superb as we're both the wine and whisky. All in all a fantastic evening. Thoroughly recommended.

A truly comfortable and welcoming hotel. Excellent food. Luxuriously appointed large ensuite rooms and public spaces. A very relaxing couple of days.

Went for the Spain to speyside meal with tamdhu, as part of the whisky festival. Really nice spanish starter. Tapas of squid, brushetta, pork shoulder ans prescutto ham. The main was a bit safe and not really 'Spanish ' of a chicken dinner, having said that, it was really well cooked and presented. The desert was again a bit safe, but not really Spanish. Having said that again the tapas deserts of, honey lemon posset, chocolate tart, and cinnamon Scone, were really well cooked and presented.

The whole experience was served with 4 tamdhu whisky. All the whisky had been matured in sherry casks. That is all they mature in. This has been the best value event of the spirt of speyside. Well worth the money. Would certainly go back and easy to recommend to others.

This is the best restaurant in Moray that I've found so far. Really great food, lovely place and interesting locally sourced menu.

One of the best, if not the best hotel in the Speyside area. Beautiful hotel and rooms with a unique atmosphere. The bar and restaurant are also fantastic. Located just a short distance from some of the mist famous Speyside whisky distilleries.

Staying on nearby camp site. Spent a nice sunny afternoon enjoying great view and good red wine. Will return for a meal for sure. Dogs only allowed outside on the terrace - thus 1 star deducted.

We went for dinner. Food quality is good and the whisky bar unique. The place is very cozy. The staff seems to be rushing to get you moving out as we felt pressure to have the drinks quickly just when we where enjoying the fire.

Small seasonal menu. Food was excellent, had the monkfish cheeks, very fresh and tasty. Staff are superb and very helpful. There is a beautiful whiskey room also and a lovely smoking area.

I don't know what else to say. The Dowan's has 4 stars on their sign, but I may come and add a couple in the middle of the night. Don't think I would have wanted to stay anywhere else. Clean, beautiful grounds, and even more beautiful people! Food was great and drink prices super reasonable. It felt more like staying in a huge house with family and friends than a hotel and its workers. I hope to one day be back to visit! Thanks for making our vacation that much better :

Chic gem of a hotel in the gorgeous Speyside country. The hotel was recently redecorated and everything about it was absolutely beautiful. Rooms were clean and modern, staff was super friendly and helpful. Food was excellent. Their whisky collection was extensive and their expertise was what you'd expect from a hotel in this area. Very close to excellent distilleries and a quaint country town. Dowans is my happy place and I can't wait to go back.

The only reason I have left a 4 star review is because my steak was very undercooked (asked for Medium but was blue in the middle), but was replaced and dealt with very quickly and professionally. Is a beautiful location, stunning bar and the rooms were amazing. Service is first class and can not recommend highly enough. Slightly gutted to award 4 star and if the steak was cooked right 1st time would get it.

What a fantastic stay! We were in the Macallan room - supremely comfortable bed, beautiful bathroom with deep, separate tub. The view is magnificent. We loved the room, but even better was the hospitality of the bar area and the scotch room. The food was very good, and after dinner the first night we cancelled other plans for night two and chose to eat there a second night. Fabulous cocktails and magnificent scotch selection. We hope to be back and highly recommend! Also do the lovely little walk by the Falls adjacent to Aberlour distillery. So beautiful and a nice way to stretch your legs.

Look no further, this place is as good as it gets. The Dowans are an amazing family and their hospitality is above par. Amazing stay, amazing food, impeccable service! The whisky room is a plus too. We will be back!

Grounds are lackluster, rooms are ok. Probably the nicest place near this town. Staff person (young girl) was quite rude and patronizing when asked questions about the accommodation. Zero customer service, no help with bags, no introduction to the place etc. We just came up from Fonab Castle the night before and it was amazing! Night and day difference to this place If you must stay here then don't set your expectations too high (this is not a 4 star accommodation), and everything will be fine. Although i do think you could spend less money elsewhere and be equally as happy. Save your money for the excellent whiskey!
