Originally built in 1535, The Bull Hotel in Bridport has a long and rich history - and retains every bit of its charm and character today. It was the scene of a murder during the Monmouth Rebellion, when Lieutenant Coker of Mappowder was killed by Colonel Venner, an officer of the Duke of Monmouth in 1685.
The Bull is located on East Street in Bridport, Dorset, less than a couple of miles from the south coast. Get the train into Dorchester South, Dorchester West, Crewkerne or Axminster stations, and you're left with a short taxi ride into Bridport. Taxis from Dorchester Stations are approximately 35 each way, but car hire is also available from U Drive which is directly outside Dorchester South Train station. The Bull is the perfect place to stay for a few days of coastal exploration, with the beautiful Jurassic coastline just 1.5 miles away.

3rd time of staying. This time a Wake for my sister.8 April 2022. The Staff were excellent. So helpful, understanding, Lauren on Reception was especially wonderful and professional. Food was great. We were treated with compassion and nothing was too much trouble. The bar staff were really good, as was the man in charge of the suite at the end. He was very accommodating allowing us all the time we needed at the end of the evening, which he did not need to do. Simply wonderful! Breakfast, was as ever scrumptious. Thank you for making our stay memorable . Dawn Robinson

Stayed for six days and I have to say the food was excellent and the room was comfortable. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to please us. I'm not vegan but my wife is and they will provide vegan options from the menu, but only if you ask. A lot of the options are not on the menu and I feel they should be. Don't be afraid to ask even when you go down to breakfast. There's not much to do in the area though apart from a very small cinema, there's not much else.

Nice venue, attractive inside & out. Food very good. But stayed 2 nights & had terrible sleep. Mattress & pillows like concrete. The noise from other guests using their ensuites, open wardrobes & drawers, as well as walking down the corridors was terrible. We were part of a large party & only 1 person I spoke with had lucked out with a soft pillow, but still had a concrete mattress. Go during daylight & you're fine, just don't go for a good nights sleep as you will not get one!

The Bull conservatory is especially good during Covid. Tables spread round the huge area, widely spaced. We had afternoon tea and 2 children's meals. The child fish and chips was really good. The afternoon tea looked beautiful and the scones and cream were freshly baked and delicious. The staff were friendly and very helpful when asked.

Just come back from afternoon tea it was very disappointing. We were not informed there was a wedding today so our afternoon tea was spoilt by not having a table and it feeling like you were at a football match. After three quarters of an our we managed to get a cup of tea. As it was my birthday treat I wasn't impressed. When eventually the wedding party departed it was peaceful the afternoon tea was lovely and the staff were very helpful. I suggest you either discontinue afternoon teas on a Saturday or let people know so they realise that it will be crowded.

It would have been five stars but the breakfast let them down. Even though you could tell the food was good quality it was cold. When I mean cold I'm talking about every item of food that was meant to be hot was cold. I decided to go with the toast in the end but did not have much luck there either as you put your slice of bread in the machine and came out not toasted, so put it through again and came out burnt.
Breakfast is included in the price of your room otherwise I would have been asking for my money back. The breakfast staff themselves were walking about like zombies and if you asked anything you had to say it twice. We did raise our issues with the duty manager on departure who said he would pass on our comments to the kitchen and management. Overall a good hotel but breakfast experience could be a lot better.

We stayed for one night and we found our room to be very clean, spacious and comfortable with good tea/coffee facilities and fridge. The hotel itself was very clean and all staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. Breakfast was excellent, good variety and most enjoyable. Our only disappointment was not having the restaurant open for dinner with a full menu and having to have the limited bar menu. However the food was still good. Yes we would stay again as thought it was good value for the price we paid.

We've spent a wonderful two nights at the Bull and the interesting little town of Bridport and surrounds. We were welcomed warmly on arrival and directed to park behind the hotel (free!), shown to our room on the second floor. Commenting on the hotel and accommodation: it's an old coaching house, so has all the creaks and structural foibles you'd expect of an ancient building. It's been recently refurbished and is looking very swish. They've made clever and considered use of the spaces, and the decor is sensitive and creative.
I really loved the small details, like the retro mirrors, the sheepskin rug, the wool bed-throw and prints of the local area on the walls. The bed was big and very comfortable. The only complaint was the seagull noise at 4am - squawking up a hell of a racket. I closed and locked the sash-windows the next night which made a difference. The bathroom was light and spacious, and they offer Bramley products which are all 'nasty' free.
Highly recommended. Commenting on the food and dining: There are inside and outside dining and drinking spaces. We ate dinner and breakfast inside on both occasions. The tables are small, so you struggle to find space for everything, but beyond that, the food is exceptional. The wine-by-the-glass is competitively priced and was of a high standard.
We ate fresh fish, seafood, beef and lamb and it was all exquisite. The kitchen are doing a great job, and if I look at the reviews from the years preceeding, I can see that the Bull have really striven to do better and exceed expectations. Service was good, not overly familiar nor invisible. All staff seem to be well trained and familiar with the food, and in so doing were able to make their own recommendations. Book ahead for dinner, it is becoming more popular.

Believe it or not, I've got family in this area of West Dorset. Its one of the most amazing parts of Britain. In Bridport, the Bull Hotel is widely known for its good food and friendly staff. There was quite a big group of people so we had one of their private rooms which was very nice, complete with a wood burning fire. The food was really nice, I had soup of the day to start and then the steak as a main.
The steak was really nice and came with a nice salad and chips. It was really busy in the main part of the building so the service was a little slow but that could be understood. Staff were really good and paid a really good level of attention to detail. I've been to this place many times before so I can't say I won't be back again! A really nice place, in a beautiful part of Dorset

Quirky rooms, nicely done, if not terribly practical (we had a four poster bed with a rolltop bath in our room but the latter was really for effect, and better use could have been made with the space there was a separate bathroom anyway). Osborne and Little wallpapers, antiques, all very tasteful a less corporate version of a hotel du vin. Pleasant staff.
Some signs of wear and tear (a chair in our room needed a new seat). Lovely outside courtyard for drinks. Main restaurant was fine for breakfast, but the dinner we had there was awful the chef knew all the notes, but couldn't play a tune. We cancelled our booking for another night, and went elsewhere. There is a separate pizza and cider eatery, the Stable, which we didn't try. The place is not cheap. This seems to have been a labour of love, and could so easily have been wonderful, as opposed to merely ok. So near, and yet so far.

Great hotel. Very relaxed, casual, feel, with friendly, efficient service. Superb food, and an excellent wine list too. Not quite London prices, as other reviews suggest, and certainly of a quality that for us justified the price. We had a family room at the back of the hotel which, though not massive, was very comfortable and absolutely fine for our needs (and had a separate small sleeping room with bunk beds for our son).
The hotel is child-friendly, and provided both childrens tea and great baby-sitters (and also has a listening service if you don't want to go to the expense of a sitter). All-in-all, a great base for a much enjoyed three day escape!

We were looking for a nice place to spend the Easter weekend in the countryside (we are Londoners with a small young family) and ended up by chance at the Bull Hotel. We had a great time, the hotel is simple and charming in Bridport, a small town with a vibrant market on Saturdays and not much happening the rest of the week. The staff is really nice and the hotel has a great homy feeling, no posh service just friendly and professional support when you need it.
The rooms have they own personality with elegant wallpapers and French antique furniture, and the bar and restaurant are lively, comfy but also quite stylish. There is a nice little hidden bar with armchairs and dark walls that opens up at night. The food was really good and good value (by London standard, a bit expensive compared to local alternatives).
The Bull Hotel is rally child friendly which is why we went there and we were able to test that with our own little monsters (they loved the Ball Room where they could play in the hotel and they loved the bunk bed in their little room next to ours). Bridport is a good base to explore Dorset and the Bull Hotel is the perfect base for a young family or couple in need of a restful place to relax with no stress and make the most of this beautiful part of England. We may well be back. and will definitely recommend the place to our friends.

I was really disappointed with this hotel, especially given the number of good reviews I'd read across the media for it. Our room was so small that I had to get out the end of the bed, there wasn't enough room at the side. Given the emphasis they place on food I thought the breakfast was unimpressive - cheap orange juice rather than freshly squeezed and what tasted like cheap marmalade which didn't taste any nicer just because it was decanted into a nice serving dish. I found the service indifferent and would definitely not go back.

I'm in two minds as to what I think to this boutique hotel in Bridport, Dorset. On the one hand the rooms are lovely, all differently designed with a mixture of old and new furniture, Neals Yard toiletries and fluffy white towels. On the other hand the rooms at the front of the hotel are noisy being on the main road, not brilliantly finished and in some cases right slap bang next to the gents loos for the bar downstairs.
Also the prices they charge are London type prices but do not feel value for money. The food however is fantastic and well worth a visit even if you don't stay in the hotel.
